Hobbies | By Victor Epand @ Wednesday, 19th March 2008 @ 5:32 PM

Flying is a passionate hobby pursued by many people. It is one way to unwind and relax. You can have 2-stroke or 4-stroke engines for your model airplane. A 2-stroke engine is much lower in power and output, but has a specialty of its own. It is made up of glow or nitro fuel, which contains alcohol. And the castor oil is used for lubrication. 2-stroke means that fuel is ignited on every second stroke of the piston in the cylinder. As the cycle increases, the power output increases. As it is simp... more...

Haven't You Always Wanted A Grandfather Clock?
Hobbies | By Harwood E Woodpecker @ Tuesday, 18th March 2008 @ 6:01 AM

Remember when you were growing and used to watch old black and white movies? Every grand house used to have a beautiful grandfather clock in the reception area or on a landing at the top of the stairs. I think every Sherlock Holmes film I ever saw had at least a couple of grandfather clocks in it. So whatever happened to the grandfather clock? Where did they all go and why don't we see them anymore? The answer might be more obvious and simple than we'd imaging really. A grand... more...

The Art of Show Jumping
Hobbies | By Jimmy Cox @ Monday, 17th March 2008 @ 4:25 PM

There is often a certain feeling of relief when a fence, particularly a difficult one, has been left safely behind. Such a feeling endangers concentration, and for a few very important strides the rider may forget his preconceived plan and a very momentous phase in the round may be indifferently ridden. In practice, the getaway after landing merges directly into the approach to the next fence, which follows the route chosen when the course was inspected on foot. The fundamental necessity, theref... more...

Choosing the Right Wood for Turning
Hobbies | By Jimmy Cox @ Monday, 17th March 2008 @ 4:16 PM

I can well remember my first approach to woodturning, and the subsequent visit to the timber yard in search of a few suitable pieces of wood. All I knew was that I wanted some hardwood suitable for turning and that it had to be well seasoned. To me, at that time, it all looked alike, but after buying lots of useless pieces, I soon formed my own opinion about turning requirements; perhaps you learn a lot quicker by your mistakes. I certainly did. One big advantage of woodturning is that w... more...

Building Your Model Ship Skills
Hobbies | By Jimmy Cox @ Monday, 17th March 2008 @ 10:54 AM

Well known nineteenth century American clippers are suitable for model building, because they represent an age of splendor, performance and historical significance. Aside from the construction of them, there is a patriotic pride of possession attached to them. In addition, the research work has been done and made available to the public by the supply houses. All the parts necessary to build these fine ships can be readily obtained, together with detailed plans and information. Mode... more...

Mending Minor Rips and Tears
Hobbies | By Jimmy Cox @ Monday, 17th March 2008 @ 9:25 AM

Mending can be fun if you treat it as an art and work for careful, durable, flat finishes. Study the weave of the fabric and try to duplicate it. Try to get as invisible a finish as possible except where you are making a decorative mend. In order to mend, you must have a basic knowledge of the hand stitches, although you will find that the running stitch is the one you will use most often. Stitches are usually short and fine. Rows of stitching are uneven to prevent definite lines from sh... more...

Make Your WWI Plane Replicas Accurately
Hobbies | By Jimmy Cox @ Monday, 17th March 2008 @ 3:51 AM

It is surprising and somewhat disappointing to witness the astounding number of scale replicas of aircraft that sport incorrect color schemes. This is not just a matter of small details but of the overall color scheme which ruins an otherwise beautiful model. We shall now endeavor briefly to summarize the outstanding color schemes used by the principal air powers during the First World War. Obviously, it will not be possible to cover every type of color scheme and camouflage used; therefore it ... more...

Strategies in Chess: Opening, Middlegame, and Endgame Tactics
Hobbies | By Mike Hirn @ Sunday, 16th March 2008 @ 10:57 PM

The game of chess is all about strategies and tactics. There are three stages in a game of chess, and each one is critical. The first stage is the opening, a sequence of moves in which the players bring out their pieces. The opening sequence shapes a player's overall results. The opening is often designed to take hold of the board, develop the pieces, protect the King, and make a strong Pawn structure. The overall objective is to create a position of strength to prepare for the m... more...

Hobbies | By Ronnie Wilson @ Sunday, 16th March 2008 @ 12:07 PM

Kitesurfing is one craze that's swept the world in the recent years. Whether it is in a remote island in the Pacific, or in a coastal state in the UK, kitesurfing destinations have flourished. Of course, the best way to learn the sport is on some beautiful tropical island with the warm winds blowing against your face. While it may be relatively cheap for some people, there are several expenses that you need to make, such as airfare, hotel accommodations and kitesurfing lessons. Altho... more...

Choosing The Right Magnoi Koi Carp
Hobbies | By Harwood E Woodpecker @ Sunday, 16th March 2008 @ 2:23 AM

Without seeing a picture of the koi it is very difficult to correctly name it. I also have a 2 solid yellow koi, one is what they call a ginrin yama butterfly. The koi are a mix of jap and magnoi with sturgen. The closer the koi is to the natural carp the hardier it is. Any koi that does fit a type of koi falls into the Kawarimono class which is all other koi. My husband and I planned on purchasing 3 koi this spring. I picked it out by accident as just an interesting dusty looking little ... more...

The Joys Of Keeping Koi Carp
Hobbies | By Harwood E Woodpecker @ Sunday, 16th March 2008 @ 2:04 AM

Visually there is no discernible difference between the two brands of Koi food that I have used. Koi, like goldfish, were bred for ornamental ponds to have bright, attractive colour patterns. They are actually hybrids with Asian carp and, like Ghost Koi, are not considered true Nishikigoi. Koi can be kept in both tanks or ponds, but they are best kept in ponds. Japanese Koi carp are specifically bred for both colour and form. This just goes to show how polluting Koi food is and how even ... more...

How To Make A Scale Drawing
Hobbies | By Jimmy Cox @ Saturday, 15th March 2008 @ 6:34 PM

Because as a draftsman everything you draw must be drawn accurately to some scale, it is essential that you become thoroughly familiar with scale drawing. A scale is a ruler marked off conveniently to represent proportionally larger or smaller distances. All mechanical drawings are drawn to some convenient scale. The plans of a house, for example, are usually drawn to the scale of 1/4-inch equals one foot. This means that every 1/4-inch on the rule represents a foot on the house. ... more...

Be Ready For Your Closeup
Hobbies | By Jimmy Cox @ Saturday, 15th March 2008 @ 5:55 PM

We're all familiar with the poker face and the overactive face. A poker face is all right for playing poker and an overactive face is fine for the life-of-the-party. But neither is much help to the actor. A poker face transmits nothing at all, and an overactive face soon becomes a meaningless blur. Training the facial muscles is a "must." It can be done more easily than some truly heroic muscular feats. There are many facial muscles you can train physically after you h... more...
