Hobbies | By Jimmy Cox @ Saturday, 15th March 2008 @ 5:38 PM There are some important factors you must remember if you are to become a successful portrait painter. Courage Since you have decided to become a portrait painter, you must brace yourself against disappointments and unhappy moments. No two people like any painting equally well. And no two people even see alike. Choosing The Right Underlining Fabric
Hobbies | By Jimmy Cox @ Saturday, 15th March 2008 @ 3:49 PM AN UNDERLINING of firm, lightweight, pre-shrunk fabric is used to back a section of a garment, or the complete garment, depending on design and fabric. Most fabrics, such as soft silks, matt jersey, wool jersey, woolens, lace, fine cottons, linen and knit fabrics, should be underlined for good fit and shape retention. This is very important in garments where the styling depends on close fitting. Voile, batiste, organza, soft lightweight taffeta, and China silk are suitable fabrics... more...
Watercolor Painting For Beginners
Hobbies | By Jimmy Cox @ Saturday, 15th March 2008 @ 3:42 PM There are times when one is struck, by a breath-taking scene that may never be encountered again. Should you lack a camera in such a situation, put your pencil to use and do a quick sketch of the scene with detailed pencil notes about the actual color. This will give you a chance to apply your knowledge about the warm and cool classifications of color because it will be almost impossible to remember each individual color by name. A sketch like this should not be too detailed, yet it shou... more...

Oil Painting for Beginners
Hobbies | By Jimmy Cox @ Friday, 14th March 2008 @ 3:53 PM Once you have selected your canvas or panel and set your palette, you have only to pick up some color on your brush or knife and begin to paint. It's as simple as that. Of course, how you hold your brush or knife and the manner in which you apply paint to canvas can make a very great difference in the kind of picture you will paint. But there is no one approved way and artists tend to be even more individual in their painting habits than in their handwriting. You will, of course, eve... more...

Make Your Furniture Shine
Hobbies | By Jimmy Cox @ Friday, 14th March 2008 @ 2:46 PM There are two general types of finishes for furniture, classified according to whether they are transparent or opaque. The transparent finishes, designed to bring out the natural beauty of the wood are oil, water, and spirit stains, rubbed oil and wax finishes, shellacs, varnishes, and clear lacquer. The opaque coatings include paint and lacquer enamels. The most vital step in the finishing of furniture is the preparation of the wood surfaces. The wood is the foundation of the finish, and... more...
How To Make Your Own Corsage
Hobbies | By Jimmy Cox @ Friday, 14th March 2008 @ 2:26 PM
Flowers not only beautify our surroundings, but have a great tendency to lift our spirit and brighten our appearance if we wear them. They are a principle accent in our attire for many occasions. A bride would look empty handed without her bouquet. There is a special glow in the eyes of a teenager when she receives her first corsage from a beau. We need not always wait for an occasion to wear flowers. A dewy gardenia, bought on the spur of the moment can brighten an entire evening. more...
Learning How to Bet on Sporting Events
Hobbies | By William McRea @ Thursday, 13th March 2008 @ 7:03 PM The number one rule to betting on anything whether a sporting event or not, is to never bet more than your budget allows. Once you have figured this out and put it to good use, the learning process becomes that much easier. While there are literally hundreds of ways to bet on sporting events, it would be in your best interest to bet on what you know if there is money to be made. For instance, betting on a team because your favorite player plays for them is not smart. Its just another r... more...
Chess Rules: Learn The Rules Of The Road
Hobbies | By Mike Hirn @ Thursday, 13th March 2008 @ 12:00 PM In chess, rules play a very important part in making sure the game is both engaging and fairly played. The game is popular across the globe, and the rules are also of a global nature; they need to be uniformly followed regardless of where the game is played. The basics are simple and designed to make the game one of strategy and wile rather than knowledge. No doubt some skill is required, but one also needs a degree of intelligence in order to anticipate the opponent's moves and p... more...
Sharpening Tools, The Importance Of A Keen Edge
Hobbies | By Harwood E Woodpecker @ Thursday, 13th March 2008 @ 10:32 AM All metal edges that are used for cutting need to be sharpened at some point for them to retain there edge, no amount of technology will ever change that. Hundreds of thousands of years ago, before man even discovered that he could obtain metal from ore he realised that his tools needed to have a keen edge to obtain best results. Flint tools, the predecessors to metal tools were easy to sharpen; a new edge was worked onto the cutting face by striking the tool with another piece of sto... more...
The Beauty of Garden Fountains
Hobbies | By Harwood E Woodpecker @ Tuesday, 11th March 2008 @ 10:22 PM Moving water is known to spillage negative ions, which has a cleansing and purifying impression on the air. Aside from the image luck of a statue, the materials used to make these works of art vary. If you are interested in adding a garden hose drinking fountain, the cognitive process might be more carefully considered today than it was in older contemporary world. Add knockout and curiosity to your garden with our outdoor fountains! I have also included several examples of the fountain placemen... more...

Hobbies | By Harwood E Woodpecker @ Tuesday, 11th March 2008 @ 10:20 PM Ponds built for koi should be close to three feet or deeper to allow these larger fish enough space. In Japan, breeding koi has occupied a position between hobby and art form for more than two centuries A koi pond is different from a water garden because koi limit the amount of plant life available to be grown. Koi do not hibernate and even though they can live through the cold months in the Pacific Northwest, I try to make their winter more comfortable. Koi is a drum shaped Japanese fish which ... more...
Chess Moves: Winning By Design
Hobbies | By Mike Hirn @ Monday, 10th March 2008 @ 4:54 PM In the game of chess each piece moves in a particular way. Usually a piece is not allowed to pass through squares occupied by other pieces of its same color but can move to a square occupied by an enemy piece. When a piece moves to a square occupied by the enemy, it is said to 'capture' that piece. The captured piece is thereby eliminated from the board. There are six different pieces in a game of chess: King, Queen, Rook, Bishop, Knight, and Pawn. The King moves orthogonally an... more...
