Paleontology is the branch of biology that studies the forms of life that existed in the past geologic periods and eras, mainly by studying and scrutinizing of its remains, the fossils. Basically, fossils are those what is left and remnants of a dead animal or a plant that can be seen these days that has been ingenuously planted on rocks and other form of hard earthly surfaces. Although, of course, it doesn't mean that the said "remains" are the real skeletons or the actual ... more...

Bamboo enthusiasts are very loyal to the plant - or technically, to the grass. Bamboo is a wonderful grass that is as beautiful as it is useful. There are many businesses and resources to which you can turn to learn about growing and caring for bamboo. To locate these businesses, you should turn to the annual Bamboo Products Index produced by the American Bamboo Society. Environment » Nature | By Jerry Work @ Thursday, 24th April 2008 @ 3:54 PM

The most common use for cork remains as a means of capping wine bottles. There are now modern alternatives for this service, such as plastic stoppers, but traditional cork stoppers remain the most popular choice for wine purposes. In fact, it has been reported that cork accounts for only 15% of cork usage by weight, but 66% by revenue. However, cork is not a one trick pony. It can be used for some very interesting things outside of a wine bottle. Cork is a very unusual material in that it... more...

Environment » Nature | By Jerry Work @ Sunday, 20th April 2008 @ 11:25 PM

Bamboo may be one of the very best candidates for a kind of plant to grow in or outside your home. Bamboo is attractive, can bloom in a multitude of colors (depending on the variety), and, once mature, can survive with relatively little maintenance. It is a good choice of plant for the busy, modern day person - except it's not really a plant. Bamboo is actually a kind of tall forest grass, which is what makes it such an adaptable plant. There are many different kinds of bamboo which are app... more...

Environment » Nature | By Cory Doggett @ Tuesday, 15th April 2008 @ 3:42 PM

The key to a peaceful and fulfilling trip into the wilderness is having appropriate shelter to protect members of the party from the elements. You do not want to be too cold or wet in winter, nor too hot and humid in the summer. If you are traveling far away from civilization, it is important to keep your shelter to a minimum weight, and, therefore, easy to carry. Otherwise, be prepared to obtain shelter from the natural elements available freely at the campsite. Many travelers, going ... more...

Strange and Unusual Uses for Bamboo
Environment » Nature | By Jerry Work @ Saturday, 12th April 2008 @ 9:22 PM

Bamboo is a remarkable material. Although it is very wood-like in appearance and texture, it is actually a form of grass that grows very tall, very quickly. Bamboo is traditionally used as a structural or decorative material, such as to create rugs and flooring. But I wanted to explore some of the more unusual uses for this material. As I have discovered, bamboo can be used for just about anything. Bamboo is a popular choice for making musical instruments, especially flutes. Bamboo flutes... more...

Environment » Nature | By Jonathon Boundy @ Friday, 11th April 2008 @ 3:46 AM

Exotic flowers are becoming more and more in demand today. Unlike other flowers, they can be preserved for up to three weeks if given the right care and attention. Exotic flowers are to be found in forests and mountains and can therefore be more expensive than other kinds of flowers. Also, as the name suggest, they are not as common as the more traditional flowers like the roses, daisies or sunflowers. Indeed, when we think of exotic flowers, we imagine a burst of brilliant, vibrant col... more...

Intelligence: The Most Important Wilderness Survival Tool
Environment » Nature | By Cory Doggett @ Thursday, 10th April 2008 @ 11:42 PM

One of the biggest mistakes day hikers make is assuming they don't need to plan for wilderness survival. After all, a hiker usually reasons, "I only plan to be out for a few hours. I'll be back long before sunset. There's no reason to carry more stuff than I have to." Unfortunately, hundreds of hikers die or become seriously injured every year by relying on this faulty reasoning. Wilderness survival requires planning ahead and making three basic assumptions. The fir... more...

Biofuels - Stay On Top Of The Coming Trends
Environment » Nature | By Kevin Rockwell @ Monday, 7th April 2008 @ 4:00 PM

The potential of biomass as an energy source is enormous: experts have calculated that the planet produces eight times more biomass each year than its energy needs overall (though it currently puts only 7 percent of that available resource to use in energy production). It's not only a renewable resource, it's also a seemingly inevitable one; to paraphrase a common aphorism, biomass happens. Any fuel created from biomass can be called biofuel, although the term gets the most med... more...

Tchaikovsky Would Have Loved My Mockingbird!
Environment » Nature | By Bob Alexander @ Saturday, 29th March 2008 @ 6:52 AM

Yesterday I listened to the happiest mockingbird in creation. Perched on a limb in a spring time maple tree, he cast a spell on his audience below. We listened to song after song until he wearied of all the applause and left the stage. In a few moments he came back for a curtain call and once again was greeted with applause. Enchanted by the musical ability of this particular bird, I and a friend sat beneath the tree for a half hour and absorbed every note he sang. He had to have real... more...

Bamboo: The Ultimate Construction Product
Environment » Nature | By Jerry Work @ Sunday, 23rd March 2008 @ 9:56 PM

In the U.S., most people probably think of bamboo in terms of a thin reed used for decorative purposes, such as a houseplant or rug for your living room. But the reality is that bamboo is a fine resource for use in construction. Bamboo is not really a tree; it's a grass - a grass that can grow 120 feet tall and 13 inches thick. That's quite an impressively growing grass, and one that can be used very effectively for building things. Thick bamboo poles harvested from giant bamboo... more...
