CFL Light Bulbs In Texas - Not The Brightest Idea?
Environment » Causes and Organizations | By Pat Carpenter @ Thursday, 12th April 2007 @ 8:56 PM

Mercury is poisonous, yet it's a critical part of most compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs), the kind that environmentalists and some governments are pushing as a new way to cut energy consumption. Mercury is probably best known for its effects on the nervous system. It can also damage the kidneys and liver, and in sufficient quantities can cause death. There were an estimated 150 million CFLs sold in the United States in 2006 and, and Wal-Mart alone hopes to sell 100 million in 20... more...

Plant A Billion Trees Campaign
Environment » Causes and Organizations | By Roger Munns @ Friday, 6th April 2007 @ 12:30 AM

A campaign to plant a billion new trees is being welcomed by environmentalists, but with a warning by some that in certain regions it could do more harm than good. While the campaign claims that each tree uses up 26 pounds of co2 emissions and in return produces enough oxygen for a family of four, planting the right trees is important to help the world improve her ecological and environment balance. In areas that historically have suffered from a lack of rain, and in areas where gl... more...

Why Unleaded Fuel and Why Now?
Environment » Causes and Organizations | By David Stargel @ Tuesday, 20th March 2007 @ 6:54 AM

There is a lot of talk about NASCAR changing from leaded fuel to unleaded. The long term plan was that unleaded fuel was going to be introduced to the Nextel Cup Series in 2008. Why the change in plans? For those of us who are not engineers, leaded fuel gives more lubrication and "padding" to the engine. This cushions the engines and valves and lessens the chances of the engine burning up. Using average unleaded fuel will kill the engine on a NASCAR racecar. For several... more...

Global Warming And You
Environment » Causes and Organizations | By Mike Blissett @ Tuesday, 20th March 2007 @ 5:48 AM

It seems everyday we're bombarded with even more information regarding global warming. Scientists give us finding after finding; this ice shelf is melting, that drought is longer and more severe than even before, plus it seems wherever you are in the world politicians add their personal opinions, whether genuine or not. Early summer, late winter. Here in London we've been basking in beautiful near summer weather for the past few weeks, a full 3 months early. Yet now tonight ... more...

The True Price of Fuel
Environment » Causes and Organizations | By Sam Wolfe @ Wednesday, 7th March 2007 @ 10:22 AM

It seems to that every time we turn on the TV or listen to the radio we are bombarded with the next rise in fuel prices. Is this a true supply and demand question? Well it is true that the booming Chinese economy is consuming vast amounts of natural resources including oil, but the United States is still the world's largest consumer of oil and related products. The peak of oil consumption in the US is in winter, with oil being used for heating and in recent years there ha... more...

How to Process Biodiesel
Environment » Causes and Organizations | By Matt OConnor @ Wednesday, 28th February 2007 @ 1:48 PM

A biodiesel processor is a device used to produce biodiesel from vegetable oil. It's usually a combination of a reaction vessel and collection area. Biodiesel processors are available as industrial grade systems as well as for homebrew processes. A biodiesel processor follows a certain procedure in converting vegetable oil into biodiesel. The first step is the preparation of the components such as vegetable oil to be used in processing biodiesel. Utmost care must be taken in ... more...

Effects Of Global Warming In The Arctic
Environment » Causes and Organizations | By Gordon Petten @ Wednesday, 21st February 2007 @ 9:39 AM

The Arctic and the Antarctic regions play very important roles. How? First, like the human eyes, they are the mirrors to the soul; they are the first to manifest adverse effects like global warming. We witness these changes rather most drastically in these polar regions. Another correspondingly direct effect of global warming is: any change in the polar conditions affects those of all the other regions. Once the polar ice melts, this flushes more freshwater from the region's rivers,... more...

Smart Homes to Eat Their Own Rubbish
Environment » Causes and Organizations | By Derek Both @ Friday, 16th February 2007 @ 10:06 AM

Wouldn't it be nice if we could all do something to help with global warming? Actually, wait a minute, we can! You would have to be on a different planet not to know about how bad global warming has become. You only need to take a look out of the window to observe the ever increasingly unpredictable weather. The weather is becoming so bad that natural disasters are becoming more frequent and causing more death and destruction than ever. Why is it important for us to change the way we... more...

Warming Of The Arctic
Environment » Causes and Organizations | By Gordon Petten @ Thursday, 15th February 2007 @ 12:12 PM

Science Daily has published The Arctic is warming much more rapidly than previously known, at nearly twice the rate as the rest of the globe, and increasing greenhouse gases from human activities are projected to make it warmer still, according to the findings of a 300-strong team of international scientists. At the rate global warming is going, the Arctic is predicted to lose half of its summer ice as the century closes when temperature is projected to rise by another 4 to 7 degrees Cels... more...

Global Warming Events
Environment » Causes and Organizations | By Gordon Petten @ Thursday, 15th February 2007 @ 12:11 PM

Global warming is a phenomenon that is way beyond and over the level of awareness of the man on the street, but whose impact is felt by him wherever he is.in every nook around the world, in our very residences, in every geographical location in fact. Everyone is starting to feel its impact in our daily lives. Already there are indications of the sad plight of the earth's climate in some areas of the US that are blessed with very good climate. There is ample evidence of the effects of... more...

Patriotic People Recycle!
Environment » Causes and Organizations | By Mac Bartine @ Wednesday, 31st January 2007 @ 3:19 PM

There's no doubt about it: if you're a patriot, you should feel great about recycling. Think about it. Recycling saves trillions of kilowatts of energy every year. It conserves our natural resources. It makes our country's air, water and soil cleaner by limiting pollution, and it stimulates our economy by creating new jobs. Politicians and pundits from both the Left and the Right strongly agree that we should decrease our dependence on foreign oil. So recycling m... more...

Some Strong Benefits of UPS Replacement Batteries
Environment » Causes and Organizations | By Keith Londrie @ Tuesday, 2nd January 2007 @ 7:09 PM

As our knowledge grows so great that an Eyclopedia now must have 30 plus volumes, as our understanding of the planet around the us expands, all the while the need for electrical sources also expense, most universally in the form of the battery. Most applications from batteries are for smaller less important items such as a Walkman, CD player, and such. It seems in today's economy, that the battery is an all important item. Everywhere you look you will find an item that requires a battery... more...

Bio-Diesel Generators - Some Faqs Answered
Environment » Causes and Organizations | By Jason Uvios @ Saturday, 23rd December 2006 @ 3:58 PM

Endless exposure to environmental pollution makes us contemplate a world that will be untainted and quiet and free of all kinds of impurities. Well, this is not impossible to achieve if we become a little careful about our environment and start using such products that cause less pollution in the world. Biodiesel is one such product that helps to keep the environment clean and uncontaminated. This clean diesel fuel is produced from 100% natural, 100% renewable vegetable sources. The vege... more...

The Advent of Biodiesel Algae Power
Environment » Causes and Organizations | By Matt OConnor @ Friday, 15th December 2006 @ 6:25 PM

With the increasing interest in biodiesel as an alternative fuel for diesel engine cars, further studies are being made in order to discover a means to process such alternative fuels in amounts that will be able to compete with current petroleum based fuels. Unfortunately, biodiesel supply still falls below the increasing demand for it. Partly responsible for this is the insufficient supply of straight and waste vegetable oil needed to convert into biodiesel. And because vegetabl... more...

Biodiesel and Its Impact on the Environment
Environment » Causes and Organizations | By Matt OConnor @ Monday, 4th December 2006 @ 12:01 PM

Biodiesel has been getting its share of interest among people in the search for alternative fuels. The cost of oils has been steadily going up in the worldwide market and many think it is time to find alternative sources to tone down in some way the rising costs of using gas and other petroleum-derived fuels. One of the alternatives found to have promise is the production of biodiesel. Biodiesel refers to a type of processed fuel that can be derived from biological sources. It can be read... more...

Mother Cow Report Card
Environment » Causes and Organizations | By Victor Epand @ Sunday, 12th November 2006 @ 4:26 PM

In one respect, possibly the best person to do a preliminary assessment of a cow protection program is an accountant, because of his or her training to evaluate performance in terms of names, dates and numbers. These factors reveal a lot about the quality of cow protection, even before the project is visited. Let's evaluate the Mother Cow program by a set of standards (abbreviated here) that I posted a year ago. The point here is not to attack Mother Cow, but rather by revealing pos... more...

The Air We Breathe
Environment » Causes and Organizations | By Gary Tooth @ Tuesday, 19th September 2006 @ 1:12 PM

We don't need scientists to tell us we require 'air' to survive. The air we breathe has a gas called oxygen and without it there would be no life period. Humans, plants and animals all need oxygen to survive but although oxygen is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless, there are a lot of pollutants in the air which are not. Worse still, there are a whole bunch of impurities indoors as well as outdoors, which is why ionic air purifiers have become all the rage these days. But jus... more...
