Are Security Uniforms Necessary?
Culture and Society » Social Issues | By Steve Lott @ Tuesday, 8th July 2008 @ 10:02 PM

More and more companies are relying on security guards for protection and safety. A security guard acts as the eyes and ears of the owner of the property. This helps to ensure the vandalism, theft, and problems are kept to a minimum. There are times when it is not practical to ask for police monitoring when a security guard can do the same thing. It is, however, important for the security guard to be dressed for the duties he or she performs. The security uniforms the security guards ... more...

Raise Your Status, Change Your World, as Inverse Humor From Ben Franklin
Culture and Society » Social Issues | By Derek Dashwood @ Tuesday, 8th July 2008 @ 2:20 PM

American antiques moments of the appplication of humor to make a point are many, and most good stories have been well repeated. My recent article about the application of humor by Dr. Benjamin Franklin at the family estate of his English patron,my ancestor Sir Francis, was well received, and went to more relevant sites, 1,165 than ever before. And I notice one of the sites was wise parenting, which, come to think of it (which I had not to this viewpoint), Sir francis was the understanding parent ... more...

Tribal Jewelry, Alaska to Panama - Fewer Intact Finds, Prices Due to Rise
Culture and Society » Social Issues | By Derek Dashwood @ Thursday, 3rd July 2008 @ 1:03 AM

Tribal jewelry remnants along with tools and human bones tell the story of Asian coastal peoples coming up over the Alaskan land bridge between ice ages, and how these waves of Asian peoples became less Asian in appearance the farther they advanced into the Americas. The oldest human artifacts are at Old Crow in the Yukon, near the entry point onto the North American continent, and these peoples pushed down the east side of the west coast icefield in a gap, and this language group advanced as fa... more...

Culture and Society » Social Issues | By Phoenix Delray @ Tuesday, 1st July 2008 @ 1:23 PM

Freedom of speech is something that affects everyone in the world at some point or another in their lifetime. Literally, it means being able to speak freely without censorship, but it represents so much more than that. The right to freedom of speech is guaranteed by numerous human rights instruments, but the most notable one is an Article in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Many people use the term freedom of expression as well when talking about this topic. This is because the idea of... more...

The Progress of Illinois Homes from 1950 to Today
Culture and Society » Social Issues | By Art Gib @ Tuesday, 24th June 2008 @ 11:39 PM

Many of us look back fondly on the innocent days of the 1950s. Whether we personally lived through them or not, the era has become romanticized as the height of "descent" American culture. Life as we know it has changed dramatically since then. Using Illinois homes as an example, here are a few changes that have taken place over the past fifty years. Illinois homes are ethnically diverse. In 1950, fully nine out of ten Americans were white-and virtually all whites were non-Hispani... more...

Tezcatlipoca and Princess Diana: The Timeless Cult Of The Celebrity
Culture and Society » Social Issues | By Samantha Gilmartin @ Saturday, 21st June 2008 @ 12:41 PM

Countless people enjoy these magazines and the reality TV shows that provide a steady stream of willing victims, preferring them to art, theatre or literature. The snobs would have you believe our society is crumbling around our ears, with the likes of David Beckham as our idols what hope could civilised society possibly have? In truth, although the modern celebrity is a staple of our media they are not a mark of decline but instead they represent continuity, humankind's strange love/hate r... more...

Gay Marriage, Why Not
Culture and Society » Social Issues | By Linda Dipman @ Thursday, 19th June 2008 @ 8:35 PM

Twenty years ago I had a supernatural experience when the Holy Spirit came into my life and I fell madly in love with a woman. I was jailed, injured, and robbed of the custody of my children, all because of love. My parents, church and friends completely abandoned me and made me feel ashamed for being gay. Today I look back at everything I suffered and thank God for everything I learned. God took my persecutions and taught me to look at the world as if it were a multi-faceted game of life.<... more...

Culture and Society » Social Issues | By Victor Epand @ Wednesday, 18th June 2008 @ 11:32 AM

It is not the best thing to do but sometimes our bank account, or our time, means we have to re-gift a gift to friends and relatives. When re-gifting, there are several rules you should follow. The best gifts to re-gift When you are re-gifting, there is nothing that beats unopened liquor bottles. Liquor is always popular, especially around the Christmas season, and an unopened liquor bottle that has been sitting in your cupboard for four months looks exactly like an unopene... more...

Gift By Another Name Is Still A Gift
Culture and Society » Social Issues | By Victor Epand @ Wednesday, 18th June 2008 @ 1:01 AM

You walk into a shop and find a notice on an item that says Buy Two Get One Free. We see them everyday, in most shops around the world, but do we know what that is called? Now you do. It is a lagniappe, which is a small gift from a merchant to a customer, usually in the from of a sale that encourages you to buy more than you would, with the reward of a free item. The word comes from the Spanish word la napa, meaning something that is added. The word is often still used in Central America ... more...

Why Young People are Assumed to be Bad Drivers
Culture and Society » Social Issues | By Amy Nutt @ Monday, 16th June 2008 @ 4:38 AM

While some individuals pay no mind to seeing a teenager behind the wheel of a car, there are others who cringe at the site. As soon as they see the words "Student Driver" plastered on the car, they envision one more hazard on the road. This could be considered a type of stereotyping, but there is a reason in which these people feel this way. They have probably seen in the media and even in person a multiple vehicle accident caused by a teenage driver or an accident a teenager driver got ... more...

Tips To Protecting Our Children From Molesters
Culture and Society » Social Issues | By Rachel Yoshida @ Thursday, 12th June 2008 @ 4:44 AM

Have you ever heard someone say that you can watch a child all day long and nothing happen, but as soon as you look away that is the very moment that they will fall and get hurt? That really does seem to be the truth of the matter. Parents can be really conscious of protecting their children from accidents when they are playing because they love them and can not stand the thought of them being hurt. After all this loving protection, then they can turn around and do some of the dumbest th... more...

Anxiety and Lexapro: Is Lexapro the Best Remedy For Anxiety?
Culture and Society » Social Issues | By Michael Smith @ Wednesday, 11th June 2008 @ 11:57 PM

Are anti-depressants modern miracles or unnecessary? I don't want anyone to think that I'm bashing the United States health care system, or Big Pharmaceuticals, or Uncle Sam...but, powerful prescription drugs should be a last resort not a first line of defense. Anxiety and lexapro should go hand in hand if all else fails. That has been my approach, and I have definitely beaten this horrible affliction. It's common sense, drugs should be a last line of defen... more...

Obsessive Worries: When Are Obsessive Worries Out Of Control?
Culture and Society » Social Issues | By Michael Smith @ Wednesday, 11th June 2008 @ 2:57 AM

We live in a very stressful modern society and sometimes things get out of whack for people. It's easy to do. The balance in life is thrown off. And when balance it thrown off things like anxiety and depression creep in. Kind of like nature's way of telling us that something's wrong, that some problem needs to be addressed. Unfortunately, in today's world the imbalances are greater the symptoms more wider spread than ever before. What's to blame? L... more...

Stress In The Work Place Can Be Good And Bad
Culture and Society » Social Issues | By Gav Shannon @ Sunday, 8th June 2008 @ 5:23 AM

One of the main reasons work overload and pressure has increased is that organisations in the developed world are trying to compete with cheap labour in the emerging economies. Ironically workers in the emerging economies are also experiencing greater levels of stress. The cost of stress in the workplace is enormous and is estimated to consume between 5% and 10% of gross national product per annum. The ability to lower levels of stress in the workplace has been shown to improve employee h... more...

Stress Is A Huge Problem At Times
Culture and Society » Social Issues | By Gav Shannon @ Sunday, 8th June 2008 @ 5:21 AM

Life can be stressful and at times you'll have to take steps to deal with ongoing stress in a positive way. Stress can have a variety of causes such as family problems, job problems, financial difficulties, false expectations or even the death of someone close to you. It is important to recognize the causes (some stress is natural) and, if possible, take steps to deal with the root of the problem or ask for help from friends and, in severe cases, professionals. Stress can be part... more...

The Downsides of Video Gaming
Culture and Society » Social Issues | By Anna Tyler @ Saturday, 7th June 2008 @ 3:08 PM

There was a time when I played video games far too much for my own good. More to the point, it could be argued that I was an addict. Despite this, it didn't take long until I started to realize that after buying my latest new Xbox games, my ability to think about real life problems had become damaged to a terrifying degree. Not only that, I found out also that I tended to be much more bad-tempered and my tendancy was to be a lot more militant towards other people. It seems surprising now th... more...

Culture and Society » Social Issues | By Steve Lott @ Thursday, 5th June 2008 @ 6:09 PM

The police uniform is clothing of distinction. The uniform demands respect for the person wearing it. The men and women who put on the police uniform every day are individuals who have sworn to protect and serve our communities. Whether it is rescuing a cat from a tree, a dog from a well, or disarming the wild eyed gunman at the school, these officers put on the police uniform every day no matter what. The men and women who wear the police uniform should be commended for their bravery.... more...

Let Your Child Build a Positive Body Image
Culture and Society » Social Issues | By Teeja Hivsbob @ Tuesday, 3rd June 2008 @ 6:45 AM

Your teenager may be developing a negative body image, what with all the pressures which expects him or her to look good (according to the misconceived standards that is). This can cause your teenager to try anything, however drastic, just to subscribe to otherwise unachievable goals. As a parent, you have the upper hand when it comes to changing your teenager's conception's on beauty, since it is you whom your child trusts the most. Reverse the negative pressures by rebuildin... more...
