Old Finds On Fire In The News
Culture and Society » Humanities | By Aydan Corkern @ Friday, 31st October 2008 @ 3:33 PM

In the news today our archaeologists and scientists have been on fire with the findings of so many different kinds of old finds. I am referring to things that had been underground for millions of years. In a Greek dig, they unearthed a very old Neolithic household and some of its gear. In another find, they found a 190 million year old small juvenile dinosaur that was the size of a pigeon, weighing no more than two sticks of butter. Despite its size, this was no little angel. It was called a hod... more...

Culture and Society » Humanities | By Evie Parrish @ Sunday, 28th September 2008 @ 5:07 PM

Fire damage is one of the most unpleasant things you could experience and the very thought of it flashes a lot of uncomfortable pictures. The condition is even worse for those who had a firsthand experience in dealing with fire damage and in this case the fire accident keeps haunting you and many nights you would wake up jolted by the nightmare. It is common for the fire victims to wake up in the middle of the night troubled by the sequence of incidents as if it is happening for real. As... more...

Not Hose Reels, Scots Reels!: Dances of the Scots Countryside
Culture and Society » Humanities | By Jon Butt @ Friday, 12th September 2008 @ 6:06 AM

We're all familiar with reels as tools, whether we're talking about fishing reels, hose reels for fire fighting, or demo reels in the world of filmmaking or video art. But one use of the word "reel" that many of us have forgotten about is the tradition of the reel in dancing--one of the four basic dances of the mysterious highlands of Scotland. For all the Scots people will tell you about tradition, the reel in its present form is actually a fairly modern invention in t... more...

Caring For The Planet And Environment
Culture and Society » Humanities | By Victor Epand @ Wednesday, 10th September 2008 @ 8:25 AM

Many vedic books teach individuals how to properly care for their environment and planet, which has been given as a gift. With proper care their environment and planet will continue to provide for them and for future generations with the food they eat to the water they drink. The environment and planet have been created to provide all the necessities that individuals will need during their life time. Individuals need to learn how not to exploit the resources that are provided to them or t... more...

The Mystery of Edward Leedskalnin
Culture and Society » Humanities | By Michael Kohler @ Thursday, 4th September 2008 @ 11:40 PM

The Coral Castle in Homestead Florida is one of the most mysterious structures of modern times. Constructed by one man, Edward Leedskalnin, this 1100 structure made of huge coral blocks were single handedly carved, moved, positioned by this 100 pound Latvian immigrant less than a hundred years ago. Although the Coral Castle itself is a great mystery, seemingly even more mysterious is the man who created it. Ed Leedskalnin was born in Latvia in 1887 and he died in Miami, Florida in 1951.... more...

Fire Extinguisher Signs And The Age Of The Symbol
Culture and Society » Humanities | By Jon Butt @ Wednesday, 3rd September 2008 @ 1:45 PM

Symbols: from fire extinguisher signs to airline diagrams, they're becoming a more and more common sight in our world. Some people consider the proliferation of the symbol to be a sign of declining literacy rates worldwide, and with them the decline of civilization in general. But the rise of the symbol is by no means bad--and by no means new. Although there is some truth to the idea that a focus on symbols is correlated with illiteracy. Symbols, after all, stand for word... more...

Who Was the Real Marcus Aurelius?
Culture and Society » Humanities | By Maxine Clarke @ Friday, 29th August 2008 @ 8:45 PM

Archaeological excavations in southern Turkey recently brought to the surface a magnificent marble statue depicting Emperor Marcus Aurelius. Renowned as a popular leader of the empire during the second century, the discovery has prompted many to question: who exactly was Marcus Aurelius? Hollywood most famously fictionalised the emperor in 2000 for Ridley Scott's Oscar-winning epic Gladiator, yet the true life of Marcus Aurelius elicits far more interest than then character portrayed... more...

The Truth About American Colonists
Culture and Society » Humanities | By Max Walker @ Tuesday, 26th August 2008 @ 5:55 PM

The English colonists in North America were neither adventurers nor the rulers of great and ancient peoples. Unlike various colonizers down the ages, they had no need to impress the native people, nor did they have a strong local tradition to fit into. They were simple, hard-working people, often craftsmen, seeking a better life across the sea. There was little stone suitable for building, and there was no lime, which ruled out brick building, but there was abundant timber. As a result, the arch... more...

The Significance of the Celtic Cross
Culture and Society » Humanities | By Warren Wong @ Saturday, 2nd August 2008 @ 2:06 AM

There are many places in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland where you will see large numbers of Celtic crosses. Many people confuse the Celtic cross with the High Cross and the Irish Memorial Cross, but it is completely different. The image of this cross is that of a conventional Latin cross with a circle connecting the stem and the arms. One usually associates this as a symbol of the Irish missionaries, but since they are found in England, Scotland and Wales as well as Ireland, it i... more...

This is something that can be done through the use of a professional who has training in translating different languages into English or into whatever language you want. The first is through the use of the Internet; there are a number of websites that allow you to center your chi... more...

Culture and Society » Humanities | By Samantha Gilmartin @ Tuesday, 22nd July 2008 @ 4:59 AM

Picking someone as Britain's worst ever ruler is certainly no easy task. How does one pit someone like the Saxon Ethelred the Unready with say the 20th Century's Edward VIII? In spite of this, a group of high profile historians have got together with English Heritage and come up with a top three failures; a trinity of shame if you will. The first on the blacklist is Mary I of Scotland. More commonly refered to as Mary Queen of Scots, Mary I was crowned Queen of Scotland and betr... more...

Culture and Society » Humanities | By Ann Knapp @ Sunday, 25th May 2008 @ 4:24 PM

Like every other community in the United States, Detroit experienced devastating poverty during the Great Depression of 1929. It was during this time that the city's poor came knocking at the St. Bonaventure Monastery on Mt. Elliot Street, home of the Capuchin Order. Friar Solanus Casey urged the order to feed the hungry with soup and sandwiches. Eventually, the lines grew to more than 2,000 people waiting for their single meal of the day. The friars knew they had to do more. The fri... more...

It has always been the function of the actor to be the emotional physician, who gives solace, encouragement and freedom of feeling to people who need it - when they need it. This has been the challenge of the actor since the beginning of time. He is the torchbearer of a great tradition; a fearless trail blazer into an expanding frontier. The actor must not be afraid to ... more...
