Between ages two and five, most physical developments occur rapidly. The most obvious physical developments are changes in body size and shape. More crucial changes involve the maturation of the brain and central nervous system. This maturation allows the mastery of motor skills that sets the five year old apart from a toddler. During the preschool year children become slimmer as the lower body grows and some of the fat from infancy is burned off. The five year old child no longer has the... more...

Using "Journals" to Develop Purposeful Writing in the Classroom
Culture and Society » Education » K-12 | By Don Alexander @ Monday, 13th August 2007 @ 11:04 AM

Writing in "journals" or "journal time" was one of my favorite subjects growing up in school. I can remember looking forward to the comments the teachers would write daily in my journals. As years passed on in grade school, I grew accustomed to positive grades and opinions being given to me on my journal entries. I can remember when journal writing was a must do all the way up to attending high school. When I entered college, journals became non-mandatory. What a shame.more...

Moral Development Theory: Understanding Childhood Behaviors
Culture and Society » Education » K-12 | By Don Alexander @ Wednesday, 8th August 2007 @ 8:53 PM

Kohlberg asserts that development occurs through six stages of increasing complexity, from what "might make right decisions" to the recognition of universal ethical principles. A lot of other theorists set out levels of criticisms against it. Kohlberg's theory seems to be generally valid, and although males and females may analyze moral problems somewhat differently, neither sex is generally more competent at resolving moral dilemmas. The development of moral actions,... more...

Culture and Society » Education » K-12 | By Don Alexander @ Monday, 6th August 2007 @ 7:23 PM

Teaching reading and writing in the classroom is like being a drill sergeant in the U.S. Army. As it pertains to writing, drill sergeants would do repetition, model, and show their soldiers how to make a paragraph They would do so in a manner that would command attention and they would lead by example. No one would dare stop or interrupt them in the process of teaching. In paragraphing, drill sergeants would model how to do a paragraph, then they would meticulously inspect everyone's... more...

Teaching Children Reverence for the English Language
Culture and Society » Education » K-12 | By Don Alexander @ Monday, 6th August 2007 @ 7:22 PM

Webster's dictionary defines English as the application to apply the principles of English pronunciation, spelling, etc. (Webster's 2004). The English language has clearly changed in pronunciation over the years. For example, the sentence, "Mom, do you wish me to unload the groceries?" is now said shorter like: "Ma, do ya want me to get the bags?" In our fast past society, we sometimes forget to utilize proper English and indeed some of us have forgotten to use ... more...

What Type of School Fundraiser to Avoid
Culture and Society » Education » K-12 | By Alec Moreland @ Saturday, 23rd June 2007 @ 12:13 AM

The type of Fundraiser to avoid when students are involved is the donation based fundraiser. This is for a myriad of reasons which will be discussed shortly. But first it's important to establish what exactly a donation based fundraiser is as no fundraising company will usually admit to running such an operation. A donation based fundraiser is one in which money is solicited and no product is in fact sold. It's pretty simple; if you as a teacher or coach are sending students ou... more...

Science Fair Projects -- Weird Topics, Cool Projects!
Culture and Society » Education » K-12 | By Mort Barish @ Thursday, 21st June 2007 @ 3:31 PM

The average car driver spends about 14 days of his/her life waiting for traffic signals to turn from red to green. If you listened to books on tape while waiting you could "read" about 70 books during this time. In 1997 about 500 people in China were able to ski. Now in 2007, over 5 million Chinese will spend time on the slopes. Seems like middle class living has reached this ancient country. If you are right handed, you will live a little longer than left handed people.... more...

Science Fair Projects -- Pollution and the Environment!
Culture and Society » Education » K-12 | By Mort Barish @ Wednesday, 20th June 2007 @ 7:02 PM

You and your family, as well as neighbors and friends fill up garbage pails for the trash man to take away at least once every week. Some of us separate items like plastic, paper, cans and bottles for recycling. This is a fairly new concept and is going a long way to help the environment. Instead of clogging up the earth with this non biodegradable stuff, we recycle and use it over and over again. But what about the other garbage that is not recycled; things like leftover food, wrappi... more...

A science experiment on the brain? Yes! This experiment gets inside your head and makes some revealing determinations! You've heard of being right or left handed but how about left or right brained? Are you left brained or right brained? Left brain people tend to be logical, sequential, rational and analytical. They are usually objective and tend to look at small parts. Right brain people on the other hand are more random and intuitive. They are holistic, synthesizing, subjective, and t... more...

Looking for a great science experiment? How about an Earth Science project? Have you heard the expression "as solid as a rock". Hold up just a minute there; rocks are not quite as solid as most of us believe. Rocks have little pockets of air inside them. Have you ever looked at a piece of volcanic rock? The air pockets are really easy to see. But even in very dense rocks like granite for example, there are tiny pockets of air inside. This is a great subject for an interesting scie... more...

Putting Together A P.E. Demonstration
Culture and Society » Education » K-12 | By Jimmy Cox @ Monday, 21st May 2007 @ 11:21 PM

It is not necessary that a great deal of extra work be done in putting on a gym demonstration as almost all the numbers are regular parts of the school's physical education program. The one main thing that contributes more to the success of the demonstration is in the organization of it and in the ease and smoothness in which it goes along. The numbers should not be too long or dragged out so as to tire the audience. This may occur in marching very easily. The numbers should be well... more...
