The History of Breakdance
Culture and Society » Art | By Warren Wong @ Thursday, 17th July 2008 @ 5:51 PM Throughout history the art of breakdance did not refer to the actual dancing that was being performed. Instead it was meant to talk about the breaks in the music. Later it began to refer to the movements that were associated with the music; hence we see breakdancing as a genre of dance in addition to a form of music that goes with it. Breakdancing itself first began in the 1970s and was typically performed by the youth in the Bronx. Today breakdacning is referred to as a form of street dancing.<... more...

Math And The Arts: Essential Partners
Culture and Society » Art | By Ann Knapp @ Wednesday, 2nd July 2008 @ 2:02 AM It's subtle, far-reaching, and coercive, and we start learning it as early as the first grade. It may not be well-supported by research, yet it defines many peoples' self-image, their college majors, and their job choices. What is it? It's the idea that there are "math people" and "humanities people": students who "naturally" excel in math and students who "naturally" excel at the humanities, subjects such as English, visual art, history, dra... more...
Renderings in Watercolor and Acrylic of Waterscapes
Culture and Society » Art | By Lynne Albright @ Tuesday, 1st July 2008 @ 1:49 PM The fascination of the almost-mesmeric effects of ever-changing, sparkling light patterns on water has intrigued artists for centuries. The subject could be pounding seas, a placid lake, a rampant river, or a wandering stream. Translating the feeling of the play of light on water to a two-dimensional painted surface is an engrossing artistic endeavor. Watercolor and acrylic are two interesting mediums (among many) having unique characteristics when used to give the illusion of reflections... more...

The Triumph Of The Baroque Style
Culture and Society » Art | By Max Walker @ Saturday, 28th June 2008 @ 12:20 PM Toward the close of the 16th century a style came into being that expressed a new concept of nature and the world, of the relationships among people, and of the function of art itself in the realms of both secular and religious power and in the private realm dedicated to the enjoyment of beauty. This amazing style was the baroque and the capital of baroque architecture was papal Rome, with Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Francesco Borromini its leading exponents. Building an Opera House in Cyberspace
Culture and Society » Art | By Maria Fuchs-Alcox @ Friday, 27th June 2008 @ 12:58 PM Reaching out to new audiences is a challenge for all branches of the arts, but this challenge is all the greater when you're an opera company trying to keep an eighteenth century art form alive and well in the twenty first century. The music, voices, and dramatic stories based in strong unchanging human emotions- have stood the test of time, but in this media stuffed, fast-paced, screen-age of computer games, high-octane entertainment and attention deficiency can you inject new life ... more...
A Short Guide To Ceramic Art
Culture and Society » Art | By Anna Stenning @ Wednesday, 25th June 2008 @ 11:55 AM Taking up pottery as a hobby seemed easier when I was a young child, but proved to be something that never interested me. Now, it seems there is nothing more that I want to do than mould a clay into a funny shaped bowl or a unique looking plate. The best part is when you paint and design the dish at the end. The whole process of pottery is completed in a slow, relaxing motion, with steady hands and plenty of patience. For people who are new to pottery, this is simply the art of creating d... more...

What's So Great About A Bob Marley Poster?
Culture and Society » Art | By Chris Campbell @ Tuesday, 24th June 2008 @ 6:05 PM What exactly is the attraction when it comes to Bob Marley posters? They seem to be very popular amongst the college crowd for one. Walk through any college campus, and check out all the Marley t-shirts for starters. Carry it a little bit further, and start asking questions. I'll bet if you asked 100 students who Bob Marley was, the vast majority of them could tell you. A few could probably name a few of his songs, and if your really lucky a few more could sing you a few words. Your s... more...

Culture and Society » Art | By Dallas Dougan @ Tuesday, 24th June 2008 @ 6:43 AM Some would argue that an actor's resume is even more important than his or her headshot. In this article we will quickly review the central purpose of an acting resume and from there discuss what should and should not go in it and why. An acting resume is exactly one side of one page, and you wi... more...

Lighthouse Poster Symbols And Stories
Culture and Society » Art | By Chris Campbell @ Saturday, 21st June 2008 @ 12:03 AM Lighthouses are really fascinating structures. Not just for the architecture themselves, which are very unique to be sure. The tall spiral column poking at the sky seems hardly practical as a domicile. Which in fact is exactly not what it is supposed to be. Lighthouses serve a different purpose, and if you asked a dozen different people they would most likely tell you the same thing. Lighthouses are intended to warn boats away, and keep them from crashing into the shore. But, apart f... more...

Culture and Society » Art | By Max Walker @ Thursday, 19th June 2008 @ 2:08 AM Bourgeois Gothic - The Perpendicular style, with its fan vaults and thin screen-like walls, was the English reaction to the Black Death. While the French were still crushed by the Hundred Years War (1337-1453) they built almost nothing, but when they did they created in the flamboyant style of St Maclou and the Beauvais Cathedral transepts stunning feats of architectural virtuosity. In the East the centres of architectural excellence moved into the Hanseatic trading towns along the Baltic... more...
