Lean manufacturing process (LMP) is the process of empowering companies to be able to implement manufacturing methodologies that attempts to maximize the valued goods and minimize the waste that comes with it. Business » Corporate | By Lee Michaels @ Sunday, 22nd October 2006 @ 5:41 PM

If you're like most business owners, you probably scramble to throw together a bunch of marketing plans and restructuring packages near the end of each fourth quarter. The end result in most cases is that you start the new year behind schedule, either because your plans were poorly put together or because you simply couldn't finish them in time. One of the easiest ways in which you can eliminate these fourth quarter planning woes is to implement some type of corporate r... more...

Gates and Microsoft Part II
Business » Corporate | By Phil Morettini @ Sunday, 22nd October 2006 @ 5:35 PM

In Part I of this article, we discussed Bill Gates and his impact on the Microsoft organization. Now let's move on to what might happen after he is gone. SUCCESSORS AND STEVE BALLMER While I'm on the topic of new leadership, let's talk about Steve Ballmer. It will be interesting to see how Mr. Ballmer is viewed in the history of Microsoft, as time goes by. Will he be seen as one of the "creators of the culture", or simply the first short term caretaker as Gates e... more...

Gates and Microsoft Part i
Business » Corporate | By Phil Morettini @ Sunday, 22nd October 2006 @ 5:32 PM

One of the big news items in the last year was Bill Gates announcing that he was leaving Microsoft. It wasn't really an earth shattering announcement; he is intending to transition out of a direct operational role with the company over a two year period, and will remain Chairman of the Board after the transition. I'd like to congratulate Mr. Gates on his enormous accomplishments in the technology industry. I would also like to applaud his coming transition to devoting most of h... more...

The Rise and Fall of Novell
Business » Corporate | By Phil Morettini @ Sunday, 22nd October 2006 @ 8:00 AM

Once again one of the great brand names of High Tech has been prominently in the news, for disconcerting reasons (if you're a fan or shareholder, anyway). This time it's Novell, Inc. A couple of weeks ago Novell announced that they are to lay off 1000 people, roughly 20% of their workforce. Certainly not a minor reduction, and not the first of its kind for this former industry stalwart. This company holds a special place in my memory. In the early 90's the Novell name was s... more...

The Importance of Strategic Advantage
Business » Corporate | By Phil Morettini @ Saturday, 21st October 2006 @ 10:24 PM

How does a company compete in the long run? I'm not talking about day to day stuff--but what sets your company apart, and gives it a place in the marketplace that allows it to survive, and hopefully, thrive? There are a lot of different terms used to describe the ability to compete: strategic advantage, differential advantage, competitive advantage, unique value proposition, etc. But all these terms mean essentially the same thing--what have you got that the market wants, that other ... more...

Shooting Stars or Industry Stalwarts--What Makes a Great High Tech Company?
Business » Corporate | By Phil Morettini @ Saturday, 21st October 2006 @ 9:33 AM

You've seen them many times. The software company that starts off like a bullet, racing at the high tech equivalent of 0-60 mph in 4 seconds. These companies come out of nowhere, and are an immediate factor in their market. There are many examples, in nearly every major market segment. Netscape comes to mind as one of the more famous. Peregrine Systems here in San Diego is another example. I'm sure every reader can think of many more. So what is the difference between one... more...

Layoffs and Bureaucracy
Business » Corporate | By Phil Morettini @ Saturday, 21st October 2006 @ 9:27 AM

A while back Id been reading the stories on the last major layoff at HP, and it really struck a nerve. HP announced that week that they are going to reduce their workforce by 14,500 people over the next 18 months. It was no big shock, since HP has been paring down their employment levels, and has been generally concerned about their cost structure, for the last several years. Their main competitor, Dell, is a lean and tenacious predator that has set their sights on crippling the HP computer and ... more...

Business » Corporate | By John Hinkle @ Thursday, 28th September 2006 @ 1:47 PM

It's Extremely Difficult for Anyone to Pierce Your Nevada State Corporate Veil When you form a corporation, whether it's in Nevada, California, Texas or wherever, you must follow certain corporate formalities. Remember, a nevada state corporation can do everything you can do except act or think, so it does those things through your board of directors, officers and shareholders. If your corporation does not keep accurate records of meetings by minutes, and if the corporation comm... more...

Accountable Or Responsible - That Is The Question
Business » Corporate | By Martin Haworth @ Tuesday, 12th September 2006 @ 1:46 AM

When I moved from a business where I was the responsible one, to where I was the accountable one. And it was a shock, I can tell you. It was a shock so vivid that just occasionally I wake thinking about it, even now! I got myself offered a great promotion, as a result of some big-time management shuffling at the top and a restructure. It was a move to a very big business and a huge change in culture for me. In fact when I got to my first conference, I was just about the youngest th... more...

BIG S, little m - The Relative Roles of Sales & Marketing
Business » Corporate | By Phil Morettini @ Sunday, 10th September 2006 @ 11:10 PM

Don't worry; this isn't going to be an article about Sado-Masochism! Well, come to think of it, that term may apply to what some founders and senior managers in startups are doing to themselves and their companies. What I'm referring to is the VP who gets hired to manage both the Sales and Marketing functions. Oftentimes this turns out to be a job we call "VP-SALES & marketing". Thus the phrase "Big S, little m". The position is usually offered to a crack sales guy... more...

Business » Corporate | By Robert Cameron @ Sunday, 10th September 2006 @ 3:59 PM

Don't you wish employees came with instruction manuals? Studies show managers spend 60% of their time dealing with people problems. That leaves only 40% to work on the organization's objectives. What is often missing is objective information on an employee's personality and b... more...
