Exploring Home Security Options By Frank Vanderlugt
No matter whether you live by yourself or with a big family, you want your home to be as safe and secure as possible. Although no one can prevent all disasters from striking, thankfully, many excellent options exist in the home security arena. These options cover all price ranges, so you’re bound to find something that works for you.
Let’s first examine the steps everyone should take to secure their homes. For starters, lock your doors and windows. Some people mistakenly believe that if they live in an area with a low crime rate that it’s okay to leave doors and windows unlocked. Sadly, that’s not true. No place is 100 percent safe. So whether you live in the middle of a city or in the country, keep your doors and windows locked.
Have the outside of your house illuminated. Place lights around the perimeter of your house. You don’t need to flood the walls like your house is a prison, but place some decorative lights in the flowerbeds near your house. In addition, have a light by your front door and your back door. You also should have a couple of lights burning inside the house, even if you’re away on vacation. Place the outdoor and the indoor lights on timers so they come all even if you’re away.
Consider a home security system. Depending on your budget, you may be able to have an excellent home security system installed. If possible, have all the doors and windows monitored so you’ll know if someone tries to break into your house. Of course, you need to make certain you operate the system correctly. Try to avoid false alarms. Too many false alarms and you’ll end up like the boy who cried wolf. So don’t waste the police department’s time. Be conscious of your alarm and don’t accidentally trip it.
Just having the blaring noise of an alarm will scare away most burglars. But if possible, have your alarm monitored. This helps because if a burglar trips your alarm and you are unable to phone for help, the monitoring company will let the police know. In addition to having your system monitored, make certain you have the alarm company’s sign displayed in front of your house. Let would-be burglars know that your house has an alarm. Chances are, they’ll decide it’s not worth the trouble to break in.
Many people suggest you look at your home from a burglar’s viewpoint. Does anything jump out at you? Think about ways a burglar might be able to break into your house. Look for your weaknesses, and then overcome them. You want to discourage a burglar from even trying to break into your house.
Limit the amount of shrubbery around your house. You don’t want to create cover for the burglar to hide in. Cut away high bushes and then place lights in the flowerbeds. You want to make it so that anyone driving by can easily see the burglar trying to get inside your house.
Finally, if your budget is limited, at least make certain you have deadbolts on your doors. Make breaking into your house as difficult as possible. Your goal is to discourage burglars from even considering your house as a target.
