The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) is a legislative act that was passed to protect the privacy and rights of personal health information. As a result of this law many hospitals will issue a security number which must be presented by any family members or guests who wish to visit a patient. This number will also allow certain family members to get medical updates on the health of the patient.
Many family members will make a phone call to the hospital expecting to get information about their family member’s condition. However, most hospitals will not accept this standard since there is the possibility of flaws.
