The Golden Mile

The Golden Mile

Blackpool has not one, not two, but three magnificent piers. Back in Victorian times, Blackpool was the first town in the country to go electric. The town had the worlds first permanent electric street tramway in 1885 and the more familiar overhead trolley trams were unveiled in 1899.

The Golden Mile offers seaside favourites like hamburgers, chips, ice-cream and candy floss. A place where silly hats and saucy T-shirts are the order of the day. The Golden Mile is also the slot machine capital of Britain with giant leisure centres.

When the first guest house opened in Blackpool in the 19th century, it became a popular working-class destination among the British holiday people.

The North Shore is one of the most quietest and least touristy areas of the town. The village of Bispham is situated at the far north of Blackpool and has shops, a small supermarket, pubs and very good restaurants.

Central Blackpool is where a lot of the action is from a night life point of view. It mainly comprises with the town's guest houses, main transport links, large shopping area, and hundreds of bars, nightclubs and restaurants. Not to mention Blackpool Tower, Winter Gardens, the Grand Theatre, Sea Life, North and Central Pier.

The Pleasure Beach, Blackpool attracts about 6 million visitors a year. The park was founded in 1896 by Alderman William George Bean, who said his intent was to create an American Style Amusement Park,

There are many pubs and clubs able to suit everybody who comes to Blackpool looking for an evening out. Most of the nightlife centres around the central district of the town, but bars, clubs and restaurants can be found in all areas of Blackpool.

Hounds Hill shopping centre is situated a short stroll from the central car park.

Blackpool Tower and Circus, is a world famous Victorian landmark. It was inspired by the Eiffel Tower in Paris and rises to 158m. It costed forty one thousand pounds and opened to the public on 14 May 1894 and is a member of the World Federation of Great Towers. The famous Tower Ballroom was built during 1897-1898 to the designs of Frank Matcham and was opened in May 1899.

Blackpools Illuminations are switched on every year at the start of September and continue, nightly, until the beginning of November. The display stretches along Blackpools famous seafront from Starr Gate to Bispham transforming the Promenade into a wonderland of colour.
