What Sets Some Detailers Appart.

What Sets Some Detailers Appart.

In the auto detailing industry what sets some appart is attention to detail. It makes sense that the guy who know all the little tricks is going to blow his customer away with his attention to detail. So new detailers need to do as much research as they can. The Internet is an awesome resource for detailing tips.

Another place to learn is from the seasoned veterans. When I first started my auto detailing business I took a weekend class offered by one of the detail suppliers. I soon found myself out there with more work than I knew what to do with. I also found myself poorly equipped to offer a great detail in a timely fashion. I didn't seem to have trouble getting the work but I wasn't happy with my quality and I often found myself spending far more time than I should on one car.

What was I going to do to improve my skills and finish the cars quick enough to actually make money. Well I found a solution that many detailers often over look. I went back to the detail supply shop and asked the owner who he thought was the most successful detailer he knew.

He gave me the business card of a guy who had been in business for years and had a great reputation for quality work and customer service. I called the detailer and explained my predicament. At first he was a little wary of why I would be calling him. After reassuring him that I worked in an area about 45 minutes from his area he was a little more willing to help. We made a deal for me ride along with him 1 day a week for a few months. I payed him $100 a day and learned all the tricks that help me down to this day.

Rick and myself are still great friends and I'm happy to say that I have been able to offer him some help on occasion. Our relationship is based on an idea that most detailers are deathly afraid of, asking another detailer for help. Most of us feel that any communication with our competitors will give away some secret business strategy that will destroy us. But this is far from the truth. With a little caution, relationships with competition can and are often very useful for both parties.

We need to remember that in most communities there is a ton of work. The things that often cause the problems are thing like pricing. It would be far better if we discussed pricing with our competition helping keep prices high. I have been detailing for years and try to build relationships with everyone I meet in the industry. I try to share tricks with many new detailers and even toss a little work their way form time to time. I have found that this friendly style of doing business has payed dividends in help from fellow detailers in times of personal crisis.

I guess what I want other detailers to get from this is that we can work together to keep prices high and the industry clean. I hope this article helps my fellow detailers and offers the new detailer some advice that has helped me set myself appart over the years.
