Dish Network HDTV Receivers Handle Viewers' Needs By Julia Hall
High definition television, or HDTV or high def as it's often called, is a complex technology. It has a high resolution picture and a much wider screen than the normal standard definition television format that we've all grown to love over the past half century. Because of these extra features, high definition television is a much more data intensive type of television than standard definition television. In fact if you were to store an hour of high definition television on a computer hard disk, it would take up as much as ten times the amount of space that an hour of standard definition television would take up in the same format! That means that high definition television presents an entirely new set of complications for any television service provider to deal with in the process of providing high definition television programming to its subscribers. That's why most cable TV providers are struggling to deal with rising demand for more high definition television channels. The transmission capacity of the typical cable network simply isn't large enough to provide much in the way of high definition television to subscribers.
Dish Network has avoided many of the cable industry's limitations when it comes to providing high definition television though, just by the nature of its being a satellite TV service. That's because the satellite TV technology used by Dish Network has an extremely high bandwidth. That's why Dish Network was able to deliver around five hundred channels to its subscribers before high def television hit the scene and why adding high definition television to the line up doesn't hurt either.
That said, Dish Network still had to obtain special equipment to transmit high definition television programming and one type of special equipment is the high definition satellite receiver. Just like Dish Network supplies standard definition television satellite receivers to its subscribers who have normal programming packages, it does the same thing for its high def subscribers at no extra charge. High definition satellite receivers differ from standard definition satellite receivers in several ways. First, while standard definition satellite receivers only display programming in one, maybe two, television resolutions, high definition satellite receivers have to handle high definition resolutions and any resolution lower than high definition. That means high def satellite receivers have to handle four television picture resolutions! These resolutions include the high def resolutions of 720p and 1080i as well as enhanced definition television which is 480p, and of course normal standard definition television which is 480i.
Fortunately both of the two high definition television satellite receivers that Dish Network is currently providing to its new high def subscribers (and of course the older subscribers who are upgrading to high def) can handle just about any type of television programming that you can throw at them. One of the high definition satellite receivers is a basic model and the other one is a deluxe model with dual television capability and a built in digital video recorder. Between the two, they'll take care of the needs of any high definition television viewer.
