This is because the claims experience for people of this age is just far too high. The companies that do offer coverage to people of this age group, charge premiums that are excessively high.
Watchdog companies are reporting that many younger people are driving around without cover as a direct result of the cost being out of reach for them. It is reported that at least twenty percent of young drivers are driving in this way.
Selecting your car is a very important factor. An expensive, high-speed car with all the extras will be much more expensive than a small run-around. Chances are you will not even be able to drive this car properly anyway. Small engines go into small categories as far as the company is concerned. This will certainly assist in reducing the premium.
A young woman driving an eight-year-old small hatchback with a one point two liter engine will save over one thousand dollars compared to what she would pay if she drove a car that was three years old with one point eight liters engine.
Some companies may reduce the premium of the driver who lists a parent as an additional driver on the schedule. Not all of the companies will accommodate this. Watch out for the deductible. Some companies have deductibles that are as high as one thousand three hundred dollars.
It is possible to use the deductible to your advantage. By making this as high as you are able to, you will get a reduction in your premium. In percentage terms, this can be quite significant.
If you have a car for weekend use only, you will pay much less as well, provided you add your parents to the schedule as registered drivers. This should be for a period of at least three years. After this period, the company deems you to be a more experienced driver and you will qualify for lower premiums. By doing sufficient research, you will be able to find cheap insurance for young drivers.
