Pros and Cons of Cloud Computing

The most basic definition of cloud computing is the sharing of computer resources through virtualization that are accessed through a service known as an APL. An APL is an A Programming Language.
There are many benefits and drawbacks to using this method. However, once you are aware of them all you will have to make the decision for your company yourself.
The first benefit of computing clouds is the costs and capital expenditures. Cloud computing can provide significant savings for you company through purchasing the necessary infrastructure, support equipment and communication costs all at once.
The vendors or service providers will dictate what the costs of their services will be. When choosing a service provider you will have to do some shopping around to make sure you make a wise decision.
The second benefit of computing clouds is its scalability. The need to add more equipment to maintain a growing company and demand of information storage and analyzing the information by internal and external users is a constant problem of the Information Technology department of a company.
Due to the fact that this method is virtual, it is very easy to add or take away equipment under the contract and expand the infrastructure as needed. This ability saves hours of headache for the IT department later and lots of money in trying to rectify the situation.
The third benefit to cloud computing is its ability to start up. Since all of the applications and infrastructure are part of the cloud, a user will only have to dial into the cloud to access all of the items they may need.
Likewise, the programs will not need to be installed on every computer. This process is very time efficient.
The fourth benefit of cloud computing is the business applications that are provided to their client. There are many added bonuses through working through a contract with a service provider.
One of them is extra business applications. Again, these do not have to be installed on every computer.
The fifth benefit of cloud computing is its flexibility. As cloud computing is virtual, the user can change the amount of bandwidth his or her company is using, the number of users who can connect to the cloud, and the number of applications available to them at any time.
All that has to be done to make this change is some modification to the contract. Of course, the price for the services will fluctuate as you make changes.
The first drawback to cloud computing is the SLA Agreements. The SLA Agreements are the contracts with your service provider.
These agreements can be very detailed and involved. It is important that you understand everything that is on the contract and verify that all of the services you would like are present on the contract.
For example, quality of service may or may not be defined on the contract. However, you should understand what kind of quality you are paying for and what you should do if you are not receiving that quality.
The second con is the performance of cloud computing. There are usually performance guarantees detailed somewhere within the SLA agreement.
The kind of performance that is guaranteed is very important. You want to make sure that the cloud will be able to support all traffic, no matter how busy it gets.
If it does not support this traffic, it will affect your company adversely. It will directly affect the level of revenue and your company's reputation.
The third drawback is selecting a service provider. Every service provider will promise they deliver the same thing, but in reality they each provide differing levels of quality and maintain various sections with more rigor.
The fifth drawback is the security issues surrounding cloud computing. It is important to consider the risk to your company should anything leak out through your cloud computing system.
Cloud computing is something that you will have to weigh the benefits and risks for yourself and decide what is best for your company.
