Saving Money With Air Conditioning By Dominic Donaldson
Using air conditioning in your home during the summer can raise the cost of your bill quite significantly. However there are ways you can save money whilst still enjoying your air conditioner and keeping your home at a nice cool temperature. Here in this article we shall look at a few top tips to saving your money and keeping cool.
First of you want to make sure that your air conditioning filter is clear as if it gets dusty that does reduce air flow. Check your unit every month and clean or replace the filter when necessary, if you do this then you can save energy by up to fifteen percent. Also make sure that you keep appliances that produce heat away from your thermostat as they can fool it into continuing to cool when it may not be necessary. If you are looking into purchasing a new thermostat then you may wish to buy one that has a warning LED on the front to inform you when the filter needs changing.
If your home uses a central air conditioning unit then you will need to check that all of the air ducts are properly insulated, especially those that pass through an attic or any other unconditioned areas. The best thing to do is have a specialist look through for any holes in the ducts as they will know the places to look. Duct tape can temporarily provide repair but any holes or leaks that you discover will need to be professionally fixed.
Having bright natural light in your rooms is lovely but the sun's heat will raise the temperature in your home. Insure that blinds and drapes are closed to reduce thermal heat. If you really want to keep the sunshine in your home then it may be worth installing reflective film on your windows to block out some of the heat. Also doing heat producing task such as the washing or cooking you may want to leave till the early morning or late as they will make a difference.
Finally another great way of saving money is to look into buying a good fan. We are not suggesting that a fan will ever replace your air conditioning but on milder days a fan can help you save up to 60 per cent on your energy bill. A fan will help push cool air through your home and on the milder days be quite effective at keeping your home cooler at a lower cost.
