Men's Style at the 82nd Oscars

Men's Style at the 82nd Oscars

Each and every year, people tune in to the Academy Awards to find out who won what award. That's in addition to checking what everyone in Hollywood wore to this actors' ball cum fashion show. The annual awards show typically turns into a showcase of the best (and priciest) designers on both sides of the Atlantic, as well as examples on how to pull off black tie style perfectly. Here are some of the red carpet trends you'll want to try.

Bright Ties
As if all the magazines and websites weren't enough, this trend's appearance at the 82nd Oscars cements its status as an upcoming men's fashion trend. Robert Downey Jr. is the most notable standard bearer, as he was seen with a shocking aqua blue bow tie - a very surprising touch for a veteran actor at so starchy a black tie event.

Downey's move, however, demonstrates just how much color can change the mood of an outfit. Against a monochromatic backdrop, a small scrap of fabric switches the gears of the look from restricted to rebellious, from confined to kooky. Because there's no print involved, he's able to stand out from the crowd without really breaching the dress code by too much.

RDJ is worth copying, even if it's just for your daily office outfit. Pick out your simplest suit and buy a bold colored necktie for it; you should be able to find one for less than $20. If a solid shocker like RDJ's is too much for you, a striped tie in a similarly bold hue will give you a more balanced and conservative appearance.

Slim Style
Ladies at the Oscars are renowned for their willingness to wear voluminous dresses that cascade all over the red carpet. While this is a trend that will seemingly never go away for the women, the men at this year's Academy Awards were all about minimalism.

It wasn't just the slim neckties and bow ties that seemingly everyone was wearing. Even tuxedo lapels - usually a conservatively sized affair - went stylishly slim this year, which created a very modern, edgy look. The thinner stance was a perfect complement to the buff, toned physiques that are common in the men of Hollywood. The likes of Zac Efron and Taylor Lautner had the most to gain from this new fashion movement.

The time is right for you to explore slim styles if you haven't done so yet. Of course, slim ties, shirts and pants will work best if you have a similarly slim body to go with them. Proportion should always trump trend when it comes to dressing up.

Softer Lapels
Each and every Academy Awards night is tied to a decades old tradition, which is why the men always dress up in unquestionably formal black tie - the height of traditional style. This year, however, a surprising number of guys decided to forgo the tried and tested formula in favor of sleeker, cleaner lines.

New Moon's breakout Lautner, for example, broke out a shawl collar Dolce & Gabbana tux that barely had any curve at all. While this was in stark contrast to the gold standard peak lapels that Efron was wearing, the switch was effective nonetheless. Lautner, for one, looked much younger and fresher than his contemporaries for the style choice.

Shawl collars, of course, aren't meant to be razor thin the way the ex-Lava Boy did them. You'd still be safer picking out a tux jacket whose collar comes out a little more around the chest to give you extra definition in that area. Note that every other aspect of your outfit, from the bow tie to the patent shoes, has to be extra sharp, else you run the risk of looking way to casual for a black tie event.

Despite all the designer names and thousand-dollar garments that walked down the red carpet, the Oscar event is always a great watch. Even if you don't manage to find any styles you like, you get a wealth of discussion topics for the water cooler the next day.
