Set Up Your Home Gym Environment For Guaranteed Success

The first thing to tackle is the environment your gym is in. Believe it or not, the environment can have more of an effect on your success than the actual equipment itself. The first step is to eliminate distractions. So no cell phone, no computer, no office work, and in many cases no TV. The goal is to make the space 100% dedicated towards your workout. Anything that doesn't have to do with your actual exercise is best to be left out of the space whenever possible.

Another key to home gym set up is to lay out your equipment so that it's as easy as possible to jump right into a workout. I know it might not seem like much, but the effort to unfold a treadmill or pull some weights from under a chair could be enough to put off a workout for another day. You also want to be sure there is plenty of room to move around. Nothing is more counter productive than having a cramped space that makes you feel like the walls are closing in on you.

Finally, consider natural environmental factors such as lighting and air flow. The most popular place to set up a home gym is typicaly in the basement, but I believe this is one of the worse places to set one up. Basements have little natural air flow, low ceilings, are musty and damp, and their lack of natural light is also a big negative.
Ideally you should have at least one window in the gym for natural sun light and a fan or two just to circulate the air. I also highly recommend using carpet or mats on the floor to quite down noise and keep dust down as you workout.

* The #1 Goal of your home gym environment is comfort. You want to be comfortable spending a lot of time in your gym. If you are not comfortable, you will have less motivation to workout and when you do exercise you will find you have less energy and drive.

* There is no need to go expensive. Simple carpet remnants and a box fan can be just as effective as fancy rugs and air conditioning.
Another great way to keep things fresh is to rearrange your lay out once a month. Simply having a different position for your exercises can make the space feel new and more inviting.

* As always, thoroughly test all gym equipment you plan on buying. Do not buy any large purchases without first testing out the gear to make sure it works well with your body type.

* Be sure to keep your gym clean and orderly whenever possible. This will help prevent the spread of germs as well as give you space to move freely without falling over weights and such.
