Dog Handling Tips, Procedures | How to Handle Dog with Care By Kevin Pederson
Handling a dog is not to be thought of as a chore or as something clinical. Dogs can make wonderful companions and each dog is unique and their needs in terms of handling can differ. As a dog owner, it is up to you to find a way which would help you communicate and better handle your dog. Each dog-owner dynamic would affect the handling that is required and which would be effective. Think of handling as an ongoing process of training and look at different ways in which your dog can benefit.
Different situations call for different kinds of dog handling procedures. One would need to bring when the dog is still malleable, when still a puppy. This may seem strange and futile but puppies need to be taught from the earliest such that the training is ingrained. The earlier you start out letting the puppy know what to expect, the better the chance that the puppy will come to understand most of what is required. The manner in which you let the puppy know this would determine things like the dog's temperament and the training behaviors. For instance, if you choose punishment and other harsh methods when handling a dog, the nature of the dog might tend towards aggression and negative behaviors. It can get harder to deal with such dogs later and there is also the added factor of safety which needs to be addressed. This is because dogs which are used to aggressive behaviors would naturally pose a threat to those around and particularly to people unsure how to deal with such dogs. One can look at different rewards which the dog may find suitable and which would be good for the dog. Special playtime can be one such treat while a favored snack could be another. It would be important to tackle aggressive behavior in a dog, such as a tendency to nip people, from the earliest. Firmness is very important since it would not do to give contradictory signals while handling and training a dog. He or she would need to be able to distinguish between desired behaviors and learn correct responses.
A lot of preparation would be required and there are things to consider such as introduction to other family pets. Dogs can have surprising choices in playmates but it is important to handle this introduction carefully to keep conflict among the pets to a minimum. Handling a dog is a matter of finding ways to make the relationship with the dog a good one.
