Starting A Salon: Things To Consider

Opening your own beauty salon can be a terrific investment. Even in a dismal economy, the beauty industry is always booming, in part because many of the services offered at a salon cannot be done at home. People always need hair cuts, and the financially secure baby boomers in particular are willing to spend lots of money on personal care. The prospects are certainly good for this type of business--especially in more expensive states, like California--but there are many factors you'll need to consider before you go any further.

First you need to decide if you want to open a franchise hair salon, purchase an already established salon from a retiring or bankrupt owner, or start your very own business from scratch. If you go the franchise route, you'll pay lots of money upfront to open the salon with the company's name. The good news is you'll be buying their reputation and advertising resources.

If you buy an independent salon that's been running successfully for years, you're also going to pay money upfront to take over, although perhaps not as much as for a franchise. And while you'll also inherit their reputation and clientele, you won't have the support system that's built into a franchise.

The third option, starting from the ground up, will also cost a lot of money. It's also going to be the most work. You'll have to attract new clients, pay for your own advertising, hire employees without any help, etc. But for true entrepreneurs, that's the only way to do it. If you do want your own salon business, one option is to operate as a landlord and charge the stylists a monthly fee to rent a booth and use certain pieces of equipment, like a chair. They in turn bring their own styling supplies, schedule their appointments themselves, and keep the money they earn.

If you start the business yourself, there are a number of additional factors to consider. One of the first is what services you will offer and how much you will charge for them. In addition to hair cutting, styling, and coloring, you might want to include spa services like manicures, pedicures, paraffin treatments, facials, massages, and waxing. It will be a larger investment for the equipment, but the return will also be higher.

Second, you'll want to decide on the hours of operation for your business. If you want to make more money, you'll need to have extended hours. Finally, you'll need to purchase salon insurance. For example, if you choose California for your beauty salon, insurance rates there will probably be more expensive than in Montana. But that also means that you can set higher prices.

These are only a few of the things you need to think about as you start your own salon, but hopefully they can help you as you draw up an initial business plan.
