Healthy Homemade Dog Food - Cooking For Your Pets

Commercial dog food may be convenient but controversies about its being unhealthy have prompted more dog owners to shift to natural and healthy homemade dog food. Commercial dog foods may contain lots of fillers and some has also known to have ingredients that can cause allergies to some dogs.

If you want to make that shift to healthier diet for your dogs, here are a few things to consider if you opt for healthy homemade dog food.

- Know what foods that can possibly harm your pet. Among the foods that you should not be adding in your ingredients are raisins, grapes, cocoa, chocolate, onions, garlic, avocados and macadamia nuts.

- Be careful in giving and handling raw meat. Although you can feed your pets with raw meat, it is important that these meats are clean and has undergone proper handling. Raw meats can be a medium for bacteria growth as well as diseases, thus always make sure they are handled well. This is also important for you and your family especially if you have kids as these bacteria may contaminate your food, so always practice proper hygiene.

- Cooked chicken bones can be dangerous to your pets, not because it can cause allergy or the likes, but cooked bones especially the small ones may splinter and hurt your dog.

- Milk and milk products may not be good for adult dogs as many adult dogs cannot tolerate them and may result to diarrhea.

- Nutrients in homemade recipe for your dog may be difficult to formulate, as it may be a mix of different ingredients. You may never know what nutrients are deficient in your recipe. However, you can check with a vet for some homemade recipes that are created to balance the nutrition of your dog. You can also find some recipes online that are already formulated to give the needed dietary requirement for your dog.

- Avoid feeding table scraps to your dog as this can upset his stomach. You may not also know if it contains some food and food particles that should not be given to your dog, as it may cause allergies.

Aside from watching the ingredients of your healthy homemade dog food, it is also important to determine the correct portioning of the food you are giving your pets. This may depend largely on the breed of the dog as well as their usual activities. If you have a dog for hunting or those other active dogs, then you may need to have large portions. However, so check with your veterinarian about the proper portioning so he can guide you in your dog's nutrition.

It is also important that you ask advice from your vet before switching from commercial to healthy homemade dog food recipes as it is of course a major change in your pet's diet. Keep in mind also to vary the homemade recipes that you prepare for your dog. This will ensure that your dog has the nutrients he needs.
