NBA Tickets - The Best of the Best By Brent Warnken
As I was watching the 2010 NBA All-Star Game recently, I got to thinking about how some of the players on the floor just played at a different level than the others, despite being on the court with the best guys in the league. I started thinking about which players are truly the best guys in the NBA today. Here are the five players that I would most want to start a team with if my goal was to win a title as soon as possible.
LeBron James, MVP, Cleveland Cavaliers: Well, technically he plays forward, but you can basically chalk him up as your MVP for the next five to eight seasons barring injury, unless Kevin Durant steals a couple from him. It's true; Kobe is not at the same level, and neither is Wade. Carmelo might be able to swipe an MVP sometime in the next decade, but I doubt it because he's largely underappreciated. LeBron has a chance to go down as the best player in the history of the game of basketball. Try to digest the implications of such a statement. I am not an irrational Cavaliers fan, nor am I a Michael Jordan hater; that statement is realistic.
We've never seen anyone like LeBron James, and I don't think we'll ever see one again. His physical skills don't make sense. There's no way he should be as fast as he is when he's as big as he is. He's a freak of nature in the best possible sense. You often hear people say that a certain player would be amazing, only if he were four inches taller. Usually, though, that case doesn't hold water as a player would lose some of their other qualities if they gained the height and weight. In LeBron's case, it's like one of the top guards in the league grew four inches and actually got faster. I don't think there's anyone in the history of the game that I'd rather get NBA tickets to see play.
Kevin Durant, Small Forward, Oklahoma City Thunder: While most people would put him at number two on a big-picture, long-term, franchise-starting exercise, I'd slot him second on this list as well. He's already one of the best players in the league and has a good chance to be the runner-up for the MVP as early as this season. He can score like nobody else in the league, and he's still really young. His range is essentially unlimited and he's improving in all facets of his game. Durant is efficient and impossible to stop - a deadly combination.
Dwyane Wade, Shooting Guard, Miami Heat: It's easy to forget just how good he is, as the Heat don't get a ton of nationally-televised games and his supporting cast in Miami leaves a lot to be desired, but it was clear during the All-Star Game that he's among the best players on the planet. It's a shame that he hasn't had much help in Miami as of late. He needs a genuine number two option and people will remember how good he really is. I don't know how long he can keep up his level of play, but right now he's third on my list.
Kobe Bryant, Shooting Guard, Los Angeles Lakers: Kobe was the one guy on this list that we didn't see in the All-Star Game, but only because he was injured. He's definitely in decline, but I'd still take him fourth on this list in an attempt to win the title right now. His post game will extend his career, just as Jordan extended his by learning to play with his back to the basket and operate below the rim more.
Carmelo Anthony, Small Forward, Denver Nuggets: I was torn between him and Chris Bosh, but perimeter players are better-suited to dominate due to the NBA's current rules. Carmelo doesn't get enough credit these days. I think he was once overrated, and now he's a bit underrated. He's playing the smartest basketball of his career, which is making a huge difference because the talent has always been there.
