Find Cheap Moving Boxes

Find Cheap Moving Boxes

When we moved from Mesa to Phoenix, moving boxes were what I needed the most. I searched high and low for ways to secure cheap boxes, and I got them. Here are a few of the tricks I learned.

Don't go to moving companies and pay for boxes. They are extremely overpriced, especially since you can get them elsewhere for free. The first place you should check is your neighborhood grocery store. Any kind of retail business--and particularly grocery store--will have boxes because their products had to be shipped there. Most stores just chuck them in the recycling dumpster at the back of the store, and some even put them in the trash.

There are a couple of ways to secure the boxes. You can talk to someone in the store, and they'll have people from the freight department bring them up to you or otherwise direct you where to go. Or, you can go around to the back of the store and pull them out of the dumpster yourself.

One of the best sources in Mesa for boxes was Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart goes through gobs of boxes, and they sometimes let you take them from right off the floor when items are being stocked. If they won't give you the boxes for free, they usually have some for sale at a reasonable price.

Don't forget to ask your neighbors for boxes, especially ones who have just moved in. You may be surprised at how many have them flattened boxes taking up space in the garage or storage room and are eager to get rid of them.

Another easy way to find boxes is through online classifieds like Craigslist. Often people post used boxes in the "free" section. When you call to take them off their hands, both parties benefit. If there aren't any boxes listed, submit a post that says you're looking for some. It's likely you get a response. And while you're on the web, take a look at websites like Froogle and ebay as well as online businesses that buy and sell used boxes in good condition.

After you've moved, don't forget to do your part. Once we were settled into our new home in Phoenix, our boxes were posted on the free section of the classifieds so that we could help someone else out. In this way, packing with and passing along used boxes not only saves you money, it also helps your neighbor and the environment. Just think of it as doing your own recycling.
