Building Backlinks to Your Blog

Backlinks are an important factor in your success in search engine rankings. While we don't know the formula for these rankings, we do know that you need to get some "votes" from the web. These are what are known as backlinks. People who find something they like link to it on other sites. The search engines love to see these kinds of referrals, so you want to find a way to get as many people as possible to link to your content.

Here are some strategies you can follow to get as many backlinks as possible.

1. Use Social Bookmarking Sites

This is a simple strategy that lets search engines know you exist. If you bookmark sites that are themselves high quality, those links can help you as well. There is some talk that these will rate less highly in the future, but they are valuable right now.

2. Write Guest Posts

This is popular amongst bloggers, because it can give them a day off from their regular blogging. It's also popular among readers because it's a change from what they're used to. It benefits you as well by providing you a link back to your site in exchange for writing an extra post.

3. Pay for Links

There are several different ways to so this, but be aware that most search engines do not look upon this favorably because they feel you are gaming their algorithm. It can be effective however, so you need to decide if you want to pursue it discreetly. This can be done by working with link exchange networks and direct contact with other individuals.

4. Comment on Other People's Blogs

A big part of blogging is being part of a community. If you comment on other blogs, you may become known as a knowledgeable poster, but it also is considered a backlink. Sometimes these links are "nofollow" which means they don't count toward ranking, but the algorithms are always changing, so it doesn't hurt to try.

5. Write Articles and Submit Them

This is one of the best ways to build backlinks. There are many sites like EzineArticles.com and GoArticles.com that let you post content and link back to your site. The more you write, the more you can post. You can be even more efficient by posting similar articles to multiple sites.

It's important to learn how to build backlinks if you want your blog to rank well in search engines. Just building a few links at a time can bring you impressive results over time.
