Search Engine Optimisation and Nofollow Links

By Tom Greaves

Search Engine Optimisation and Nofollow Links

As many of you will know there has been a huge debate brought about in the SEO industry concerning the use of the nofollow attribute in links. It has been historically used as an effective way to sculpt PageRank, send juice to the most important pages of your site.

Recent revelations have cast the PageRank sculpting idea aside, claiming there is no longer an SEO benefit from using the nofollow attribute. This has caused many webmasters to turn their search engine optimization efforts towards removing these attributes, so not to miss out on pushing PageRank around their sites.

There is a fundamental problem with the recent Google change. Back when the nofollow attribute was introduced; it was sold as a means of controlling comment spam within blogs, to protect the webmaster from unwanted links out. Due to this many blogs have comments that are automatically implemented with this tag.
So what do bloggers do now?

My advice would be nothing, this change to the nofollow attribute has been in place over a year and up until now no one has noticed it. This is because there are far more important factors that increase PageRank awarded to your site and ultimately your sites rank within the search result page.

By taking nofollow off your comments you are leaving yourself open to potential outbound links that could result in your site receiving a penalty. There is a theory known as the "bad neighborhood penalty", this means that if you continually link out to unethically optimize sites you risk Google penalizing your own site.

So forget about the no follow don't worry about it, as walking under a ladder is going to have more effect on your search position. Concentrate on building great content, attracting quality relevant links and your site will grow just fine. Of course if you still want to sculpt your PageRank do so by linking to your most important pages from your home page, this will ensure the pages receive the maximum amount of juice.

Search engine optimization is about doing the best thing for a site, but Google does not always give us the full information. In this case we can only work with the knowledge we have, so the best thing for your site at the minute is to forget nofollow and focus your efforts on more important aspects of optimization and reap the rewards that come with it.
