The drill of a basketball player is one of the foremost things to catch attention of the spectators. The experts can easily determine the ability of a player and comment upon his play with a glance at his drill. Undoubtedly quickness and speed of the drill determines the success of the basketball players on the court. This is the reason why the crowd is suddenly astonished by the swiftness through which the offensive player smothers the ball handler or the defensive player crosses and slices through the defence. Thus, speed and quickness of the basketball player are the important qualities going a long way in determining his show at the court. According to experts, regardless of the age of the player, he can dominate the court if he has the deadly combination of speed and quickness.

Let's have at some of the techniques which can be helpful to young players.

Linear acceleration progression: This comprises of several steps.

First step drill: This step involves lining of the athletes on the baseline and commanding them to go on 15foot acceleration. It is important to make use of this step for creating a force angle behind the body.

First step angled drill: This technique is very similar to the above stated one with a basic difference in the take off which should be in a different angle. This angle can range from 15 degrees to 90 degrees.

Turn and run first step drill: Using the hip turn technique the players are required to quickly turn their feet and hips. This will give the players a explosive acceleration behind the facing direction.

The lateral shuffle progression: Some techniques which fall under this category include:

Speed shuffle: This technique needs the players to form a done while standing 15 feet apart. After the formation the players are required to shuffle in a single direction as fast as possible.

Speed shuffle and stop: Repeating the above stated technique the players have to create a good stopping angle using the outside leg.

555 shuffle drills: This technique requires the players to shuffle as fast as possible accompanied with changes in the direction. 555 in the heading stands for 5 yards to each repeated 3 times.

Random shuffle drill: Often considered to be the important drill for young players. The players should be able to perform the shuffle drill randomly on command of the coach.
