8 Prevention Tips For Headaches

Headaches can interrupt an otherwise normal day. It can make you go from laughing and playing to curled up in a ball in a dark room. However, work, kids, and life in general make headaches impossible not to deal with. So what do you do? Hopefully these tips will help you deal with your headaches better.

1. If at all possible, try to take a nap in a cool dark room. This nap should not last longer than 30 minutes. If you sleep too long it can actually make the headache worse. If you have children, have someone watch them so you are not disturbed during this time.

2. Keep a lavender eye mask in the freezer. A cold lavender scented eye mask kept in the freezer adds to the relaxing nature of the nap while blocking out the light. The refreshing scent helps relax the mind and calms the nerves as you drift off to sleep.

3. Have a cup of coffee, tea or cola. Caffeine can help release the tension of headaches. As a matter of fact, many over the counter migraine medicines have caffeine as one of the active ingredients. Many migraine suffers swear by ibuprofen and Coca Cola. While others say a shot of espresso and two aspirin.

4. Experiment with pressure points on the head. Personally, if I can get pressure applied above my eye, nose and on my right earlobe my headache disappears immediately. However, this means I need three hands. So it only works if I am around someone I am comfortable enough to ask to help. You can find pressure points on the Internet or from an acupuncturist, massage therapist, or chiropractor.

5. Quit smoking. Tobacco usage of any kinds aggravates headaches. There is no getting around it. If you use tobacco, smoking or smokeless, then you just must quit. Even exposure to tobacco smoke can trigger headaches. So avoid tobacco like the plague.

6. Drink some water. Believe it or not, headaches are often a sign of dehydration. If you go to the hospital for a migraine one of the first things they will do is give you a bag of water. Why? Because headaches are the first sign of dehydration. So if you get a headache down a glass or two of water. It really can do wonders for a headache in a matter of minutes.

7. Go to the optometrist. If you are having frequent headaches, it is possible you are having problems with your eyes. Eye strain can cause headaches and people who already wear glasses often need their prescription changed yearly. If you don't already wear glasses, then it is possible you may need to start. It isn't unusual for eyes to change as you get older and glasses may stop your headaches.

8. Keep a headache diary. This is important in case you see a doctor. If your headaches persist, then this will save time. Doctors will want to know the frequency and intensity of your headaches. Write down what you were doing before and what you were eating or anything else that may have triggered your headache.
