My Struggle With Headaches

There are headaches and then there are HEADACHES! I suffer from the latter. I remember the very first time I received my first HEADACHE like it was yesterday.
I was in third grade. Yes I know. That is awful young to start getting splitting headaches but what can I say. I was lucky. Anyway, I was in third grade and we were watching Old Yeller. We had just finished reading the book so we were watching the movie as a reward. I laid my head down and I was crying. The other kids were making fun of me because they thought I was crying because they shot Old Yeller. My friend turned to them and said, "Shut Up! She is crying because her head hurts!" The teacher sent me to the nurse. That was the beginning of my dreaded HEADACHES.
As I got older, I realized my pain was abnormal and most people did not suffer like I did. I began seeking treatment as an adult. Why on earth my parents didn't seek treatment for me is beyond me, but they didn't. So as an adult I started looking. At first, doctors treated me like I was some kind of drug addict. As if it is not bad enough to have headaches bad enough to make you want to die, you have to have doctors treat you like you are some drug seeker. All I wanted was relief from the mind numbing pain. I wanted something to help. I did not want to get high. For a while I gave up and decided it was my cross to bear and was that I was simply forced to live with the pain.
Then one day I went with my friend to her acupuncture appointment. Now, I was raised to believe these people were quacks. She was paying this quack $150 to put some needles in her back to give her some relief to her fibromyalgia. She actually paid this guy $150 every week! I thought she was crazy but it wasn't my money so who cares right?
Then, I got one of my headaches in the office. Immediately, tears filled my ears. I didn't weep or make any noise but tears still came anyway. It always makes me mad that I can't control the tears. The "doctor" asked if he could put some needles in me. I was in so much pain I didn't care and since it was free, I really didn't care. To my utter amazement, it worked. My headache was gone immediately.
This made me start looking for a solution to my headaches again. Obviously, I could not afford $150 a week on acupuncture even if it did work. That is when I found out that my insurance covered chiropractors. It turns out that they are similar to medical doctors. They go to school and are board certified. They have to have continuing education and must pass state tests.
Today, I see a chiropractor regularly and my headaches are a thing of the past. If only my parents would have taken me to one sooner, then I wouldn't have had to suffer so long.
