What to Feed Your Pooch

What to Feed Your Pooch

When you buy dog food for your pooch, it is best to make a comparison of foods. First, read the label. When looking at the label see if meat is the first or second ingredient. Are the other ingredients of high quality? The ingredients are listed as the first being the main ingredient and the order descends into ingredients with less weight each time.

Some of the least desirable ingredients in dog food that are not good for your dog are: corn, chicken byproducts, chicken byproduct meal, Brewers rice, corn meal, beef and bone meal, animal fat, beef tallow, corn syrup, whole grain corn, corn bran, sugar, poultry byproduct meal, corn gluten meal, BHA, and propyl gallate.

According to Consumer Search the best dry dog foods don't have any grain in them period. The cost is $35.00 per 15.4-pound bag. The dog food has chicken, turkey, salmon and whitefish in it, plus potatoes to provide carbos. Another good brand at $23.00 per 18-pound bag has chicken, turkey and whole grain brown and white rice for ingredients.

It is good to feed your dog dry and moist food. The better-canned dog food contains less grains, preservatives, and fillers. One of the canned dog foods they recommend costs $1.75 per 3.2-ounce can. It doesn't have any fillers or grains. This dog food is ninety-five percent meat. Your dog may need to adjust to this higher meat level, as he/she probably isn't used to it, though it is more like what your pet would eat as a wild dog. The other recommended canned dog food costs $1.30 per can and weighs 13 ounces. The ingredients in this dog food are: chicken, lamb, herring, eggs, chicken broth and chicken liver.

Cheap dog foods have some really bad ingredients in them like cereal byproducts, cottonseed hulls, crushed peanut shells and corncobs, straw, and weeds. When the meat isn't specified it can be spoiled meat, pesticide-laden carcasses, and meat from animal that have died of cancer.

It is best to buy the most healthy dog food for your beloved animal that you can afford. Remember, watch the list of ingredients and be certain that any less healthy ingredient is further down the list, especially if you have to buy a less expensive brand of dog food. Don't forget that it is good to give your pet a mix of dry and moist food.

Always be on the lookout for any recalled foods so your pet doesn't eat any contaminated dog food. Unfortunately, that list has gotten bigger this year because of the problem with salmonella in peanut butter. These foods were treats and dog biscuits.

Your dog is carnivorous and the best diet for him/her will include more meat than other foods. If a food has any grain in it a higher quality grain will be better for your pooch. By feeding your dog a better brand of dog food, you help insure that he will be a healthier and happier dog that enjoys a longer life.
