Affordable Health Insurance For All Families Is A Big Issue By Shane Hester
Scream it from the rooftops - health insurance for all families is necessary - and everyone will agree, yet nothing may change. As Americans, we have the rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Universal healthcare? Not so much.
It is pretty incredible, some of the things this nation has accomplished (stop lights, democracy, great-fitting denim). And very telling what we are willing to spend money on (bailouts and golden parachutes). Yet, the money for healthcare is simply not available. If Canada and the United Kingdom can figure out a way to make free health care feasible, than surely we here in the States can do the same - but there are caveats to any universal health care system.
People are putting so much stock in the up-coming election, hoping that change will actually occur. Healthcare is a top issue and the candidates know there are serious flaws in the current system. There are two main issues with health care in this country. One, it is not affordable. Most people just cannot afford anywhere from a few hundred to a couple grand per month in family coverage. And if something happens, emergency rooms visits are, at a minimum, thousands of dollars.
The second issue with health care is that those jobs that do offer it as part of their plan are not only few and far between, but also the plans they offer are not always all that good. Families are still struggling with expensive prescriptions and deductibles.
Some companies even deny people because they are at risk of having a major health problem. With obesity at an all-time high in children and adults - and still rising rapidly - this is a scary thought. Diabetes, hypertension, early-onset arthritis - all a result of excess weight and, without proper healthcare, the people dealing with these issues must go without the proper guidance.
So, how can we fix this? Well, the people who are sure about what to do think raising taxes is a surefire way to at least begin to fix what's happening. And maybe that is the answer, or maybe it isn't. Perhaps the government needs to put a ceiling on the healthcare prices.
Regardless of what happens in Washington, do your research. Talk to every possible healthcare provider you can. Go on every website. Knock on doors two or three times if you have to. As confusing and expensive as health plans are, educating yourself before you sign on for a five-figure deductible is a no-brainer.
Because our families are so important, and because we all deserve to be well, health insurance for all families is certainly a huge issue these days.
