The Amazing Race Against Mold Caused By Water Damage

It does not really matter whether your home gets flooded by water from a natural disaster or because of faulty or damaged plumbing. It can happen at almost any time of the year and it is never pretty. It can be from mild flooding of a few inches localized to one or two rooms or it can be as bad as one or two feet from excessive rainfall flooding or even a creek or stream overflowing nearby your home.

It the flood happens while you are home, believe it or not this can be a good thing. It is always worse if you have flooding going on and you are away from and not able to even try to stop it. When the flood is occurring because of a plumbing break, it is possible to get the water off and begin getting it out immediately. When it a natural disaster flood you usually have to wait until the water recedes outside before you can start getting it out of the house. Removing more than an inch or two of water can be a huge undertaking to try and do yourself and the longer it takes to remove the water and dry out all of the affected surfaces, the bigger risk you run of mold developing and other unpleasant surprises.

If you have hardwood floors, as so many people do these days, if they are not dried out properly they will warp and buckle. When this is allowed to happen, the affected area will probably have to be torn out and replaced. If there is still moisture underneath the floor even after the top may appear dry, this is where mold might begin to grow. If you ignore this issue, it could end up destroying a lot more of your home than you realized.

It is usually always better to enlist the help of a professional water damage team when you have even mild flooding. By doing this you can rest assured that any problems that can arise because of flooding will be taken care of in the right way with the best equipment available. Water damage professionals are able to dry your floors and walls quickly and properly to help prevent any warping, buckling, rotting, or mold infestation.

Flooding from a plumbing break is almost always covered by a home owner insurance policy. They will need to be contacted as soon as the damage is discovered. If you have a flood caused by a natural disaster, this can be a whole new ball game. Home owner policies generally do not cover this type of flooding and having a separate flood policy that will cover natural disasters is the smartest thing that you can invest in before you might ever have to use it.
