Men are used to the world of big ideas. The creators of the U.S. Constitution and other great governments articulated the philosophy of justice, liberty, fraternity, and equality. Every area of life has been influenced by these concepts and ideas. The psychology of man has these thoughts as central constructs.
Today we see that men's health and mental health are threatened by younger generations of people that do not understand or appreciate these ideas, or where lesser ideas might lead them (drug abuse).
Substance abuse, also commonly known as drug abuse, threatens the health of men everywhere. Our values, those essential values which make us refined and sophisticated human beings, can be lost to addiction. Addiction can come in many forms. Some men become addicted to alcohol. Some become addicted to prescription medications. Some become reliant on street drugs such as heroin, cocaine, or marijuana.
Constant use of these substances takes a physical toll. The liver, especially, can become affected as it tries to metabolize the drugs.
Addiction causes psychological pain. Marriages can collapse, because the addict is focused almost exclusively on the drugs. Job loss can occur. Arrest by the police is possible if the addict engages in illegal behaviors to get money for drugs.
Men's health and psychology issues have found assistance through the Christian drug rehabilitation community. This movement has led men subject to drug abuse to learn that truth is a virtue, that honesty us better than dishonesty, and that dishonor can be replaced by loyalty to family, friends, and society.
In Christian drug rehab, men learn the psychology of wellness and their health improves. Men's issues and other issues of living are discussed in substance abuse treatment sessions. Rehab becomes a new curriculum of hope and wellness. Increasingly, the healthy spirit of Christian wellness returns, and the resident's psychological frame of mind is enhanced.
