Defending Your Home Against Fire, Mold, And Water Damage By Aydan Corkern
If you ask any home owner what kind of damage they fear the most and they will likely tell you that it is fore, water, or mold. Any of these issues can cause extreme devastation or even completely destroy a home. Even it is not completely destroyed, either one of theses travesties can cost thousands of dollars to have repaired or eliminated. Insurance can be bought to cover any and all of these problems, but preventing them from happening in the first place is always best.
When preparing to combat against a fire in the home, it is many times in that preparation whether or not your home sustains major damage or not. Having smoke alarms that are always working is the first step in knowing when a fire is occurring or about to occur some where in the home. Having a security system installed in the home that will alert the fire department for you if you are not home is becoming more and more popular with home owners. Fire extinguishers are also a key element in being able to put out a fire before it rages out of control. Theses are just the basic things that are needed, but there are inspections and other precautions to be taken as well.
When you are faced with water damage, it can destroy many things in the home too. The structure of the home can be compromised and many of your belongings can be damaged and destroyed too. It is a terrible mess to clean up and many times it can be avoided all together when you keep your plumbing maintained properly. Home insurance will normally cover this kind of water damage, but if the water comes from a natural disaster, you could be stuck with the bill if you do not have flood coverage. Many people in recent years have lost their homes or have had to repair there own extravagant water damage because they had no flood coverage.
Many times mold is a direct result of water damage and can be just as devastating for the home as fire or the flood. In other instances, mold can be caused because of poor ventilation that allows moisture from bathrooms, kitchens, or a damp basement, to condense and cause mold growth. Once the structure of a home has mold behind walls and ceilings, it can still cost thousands to tear all of it out and redo. This kind of mold damage can be almost always eliminated through the installation of exhaust fans or dehumidifiers. Any time you find mold, it should be cleaned and killed immediately and you must find out why it started and eliminate that problem too.
