Fibromyalgia; Your Symptoms are Real…Push for a Proper Diagnosis

You are constantly in pain but there is no concrete evidence that there is something physically wrong with you.  Still, the gnawing, aching feeling (both physically and mentally) that something is wrong with you will not go away.  You are NOT crazy.  It is very likely that you have a disorder called Fibromyalgia, and if you have these fibromyalgia symptoms there is no mistaking, you are ill.   You may have been told that whatever you have is untreatable or that you have a muscular flair up that will go away with a few doses of ibuprofen, only to have your symptoms come back right away. You may have been overmedicated by well-intentioned health care providers who weren’t able to properly diagnose your situation. The primary fibromyalgia symptoms of include prevalent musculoskeletal pain, extreme fatigue, and interrupted sleep. Fibromyalgia means pain in the muscles, ligaments, and tendons.  Most patients with fibromyalgia say that they ache all over.  The pain of fibromyalgia has no end. Fibromyalgia sufferers describe the pain as deep muscular aching, throbbing, shooting, and stabbing. Intense burning may also be present. Often, pain and stiffness is worse in the morning and you may hurt more in muscle groups that are used repetitively, regardless if you are exercising or not.   Although the reason for fibromyalgia symptoms is unknown, scientists have many ideas about what triggers the disorder. Some researchers believe that the syndrome may be caused by an injury or trauma that may affect the central nervous system. Fibromyalgia may be associated with changes in muscle metabolism, such as a decreased flow of blood, causing fatigue and weakening strength. Others researchers believe the syndrome may be caused by an infectious means such as a virus in susceptible people, but no such agent has been identified. Once a qualified medical professional has assessed your Fibromyalgia symptoms and made a proper diagnosis, treatment will be required.  As the patient, you along with your physician, physical therapist will play an active role in the management of your disorder.  Studies have shown that aerobic exercise like swimming and walking can improve muscle fitness and help reduce muscle pain and tenderness.  Although it will only give short term relief, heat and massage will help temporarily.  With mood swings being a widespread complaint with Fibromyalgia sufferers, taking an antidepressant medication may help to elevate your mood, improve your sleep quality and help your muscles to relax. If you have grown frustrated with people in the medical field who act as though your symptoms are not real and you have not been able to get a proper diagnosis of your disorder, search for a physician who specializes in Fibromyalgia symptoms.  Once you are properly diagnosed with the Fibromyalgia your physician will be able to properly treat you and you can start the road to recovery.
