The Mystique of the Black Rose

The Mystique of the Black Rose

When you envision black rose bouquets, do you picture your child trick-or-treating as the Bride of Frankenstein carrying a fake dead bundle of black roses?  That would be the consensus of most people.  However, the black rose has long been a mythical and symbolic flower.  From the beginning of time, the black rose has been a potent symbol in cultures all over the world. This mystical flower can celebrate a light-hearted milestone birthday, render the heartfelt loss of love, or make a strong case for vengeance and retaliation.  But, truth be told, a real black rose does not actually exist in nature, but nevertheless, they are often featured in fiction stories with different meanings such as “black magic” or “black beauty” and death varieties of roses.
The black roses are not even really black.  They are actually a very dark red color.  We may one day see a genetically modified rose in years to come (Japan is currently working on this) but as of this today there have been no true black rose breakthroughs. The roses with "Black" in their names are wishful thinking since the black is really the darkest of reds or purples.  Some red Black rose varieties have petals that burn to black in the sun, but there are no true blacks.  A black rose bouquet however, makes an oddly beautiful statement.
You may have asked yourself or others, “Where can I buy a blue or black rose to make a black rose bouquet”.  In short, you can not because there is no such thing.  A true blue rose has been the unattainable flower of rose breeders for hundreds of years, however roses simply do not have the genes to produce a blue color. You may have seen photos of blue or black roses on the Internet, however, unless they are dyed that color, these are forgeries.During the 19th century, the language and meanings of flowers became popular. In this convention, black roses to most people signified death,  hatred or revenge. But in reality, it really means farewell and overcoming of a long hard journey. They were often used at funerals to bid adieu to a loved one on their spiritual journey.  A black rose bouquet was sometimes given to a widower as a gift on condolence. A single black rose might have been sent by a close friend and or loved one being shipped off to war or on a journey from which they did not expect to return. A varying meaning is “unquestionable devotion', since a true black rose is impossible to produce.Black roses have been used in many book titles, most often romance novels.  Prolific authors Nora Roberts and Christina Sky have titled their romance novels Black Rose.   Another Black Rose is a biographical account of Madame C. J. Walker- the first female African American millionaire by author Tananarive Due.  Harlequin has published an entire series of historical romance novels called, “Knights of the Black Rose”.  A black rose bouquet has been pictured on the cover of the Harlequin novels.Although the black rose is not truly real, the mysteriousness of it is.  The next time you want to symbolize your feelings for someone (good or bad), considering sending them a black rose bouquet.  The point is sure to get across.
