The basic sources of a flooded basement and ways to prevent that flooding vary according to the type of flooding. Here are a few tips on flood proofing the basement or dry flood proofing:
- Installation of alternate power sources, maintaining proper pump maintenance, adding/increasing size or pump quantities could prevent flood if the sump pump experiences a failure or an overload.
- A flooded basement can be avoided or alleviated by making sure that cracks in the walls are sealed with a good commercial waterproofing compound the minute you see them. The key is to take action ASAP.
- Sealing basement windows and above the ground openings watertight will obstruct the water from getting in.
- Water backing up from the sewer lines poses another source for flooding in the basement. By installing check valves and in-line valves, this source can be eliminated.
Flood proofing does not guarantee that a flooded basement will not occur because there are instances where in high hydrostatic pressure is too great for the dry flood proofing method. We will then have to resort to wet flood proofing. It means, allowing it to become a flooded basement. Wet flood proofing is altering or modifying the structure. Another example would be erecting barriers with rock, lumber and sand but these have to be made watertight with the aid of impervious sheeting.
