The Facts About Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar Disorder is a group of mood disorders usually occurring together in episodes of abnormally elevated mood swings.  Until recently, people who are affected by these mood swings were labeled as manic depressives, a very negative social stigma that has now been renamed as bipolar disorder.  People who suffer from bipolar disorder will cycle through these severe mood swings and quite often will feel depressed, furious and then feel mania, which is a surge of high energy, and unusual thought patterns.  Some people will experience flashes of mania and depression at the same time, which is referred to as a mixed episode.

The beginning of symptoms usually occurs in young adulthood.  The only way for a doctor to diagnose a person is through their own self reported experiences.  After talking to a doctor, the patient will then go through a series of observed behavior.  The cycles of moods and behavior are usually associated with stress, distress and disruption of one’s normal routine.  Many studies have resulted in the suggestion that bipolar disorder may stem from genetics, early childhood environment, neurobiology, and psychological and social stresses.  The treatment for bipolar disorder is usually medication and counseling.

The main drug used for treatment is referred to as a mood stabilizer.  Usually lithium and sodium valproate are the prescribed medications that are used in the prevention of further episodes.  Antipsychotic medications, which are sometimes called neuroleptics, are used to treat and help prevent manic episodes.  Antidepressants have also been prescribed to help control depressive episodes, but the results are still not solid as to whether they give long term help in the patient’s bipolar episodes.

There are many studies that have suggested a connection between creativity and bipolar disorder.  Throughout history there are a great number of creative geniuses that had bipolar disorder.  Many authors have described extreme mania when they have felt elation in regards to a higher accomplishment, and the setting of goals and accomplishing them.  Bipolar disorder will affect each person differently, but one thing in common with almost all sufferers is that when they are going through a manic phase, they are more inclined to be outgoing and very daring in their daily activities, but while going through a depressed cycle, they have no energy, they damage relationships, and perform poorly in school or on the job.

There is treatment for bipolar disorder.  Talking to your doctor and discussing your symptoms and treatment options will help with your success.
