The Competent Project Team
A good project manager needs a good team. Competent project teams solve problems
efficiently, provide a quality product, and complete their work on time and in budget.
The internal dynamics that lead to t his level o f performance vary within teams and
organizations. Measuring the way a team has performed presents many challenges. The
company needs a valid assessment tool and trained evaluators. The team must cooperate
in the evaluation process for the results of the assessment to be accurate.
On the other hand, an incompetent team is not hard to spot, because a common set of
problems plague bumbling teams, including succumbing to mob thought, the inability
to make a coherent decision and various conflicts between individual and team needs,
including the competing quest for individual or group recognition and reward.
If you are charged with measuring the competence of a team, tally up these criteria:
• Understandable, achievable objectives and the ability to attain them.
• Clearly delineated, documented work requirements and standards.
• Proper skills, training and education.
• Sufficient equipment and tools.
• Organized team effort, including regular meetings.
• Excellent leadership and a suitable internal structure.
• Planned, consistent communications.
• Cooperative attitudes that embrace diversity.
• Skill in working with customers and other shareholders.
Why is there a crisis in competence? The issue resides with workers and leaders who are
unable or unwilling to meet the demands and opportunities of their jobs. Although every
employee is hired to fill a job description, many fail to rise to that commitment. Yet, the
competent have the advantage. Ability and diligence will triumph.
If you can build institutional competence, your company can make things work correctly
on the first try and can avoid expensive errors. Competence serves every stakeholder.
A competent corporation can channel its efforts toward moving ahead, not filling in
mistakes and wasting time on nonproductive endeavors. A competent company gives its
consumers a reason to trust it and to return often for its products or services.
