There are actually many types of massages which one can opt to learn. That is why various schools all over the world offer a variety of massage therapy courses including reflexology, sports massage, orthopedic massage, and lomilomi massage, to name only a few.

One of the commonly performed massages is reflexology. The use of this technique can be traced back to ancient times, often associated with Egypt , China , and Japan . Particularly, this massage is therapy that aides in boosting one's energy. Reflexology is a therapeutic massage which involves the application of pressure to the patient's hands and feet. Using the thumb, fingers, and hands, pressure is applied on certain reflex points of the patient's hands and feet which correspond to particular areas of the whole body. It is believed that the image of the body is reflected on the hands and feet. Thus, this technique requires familiarity of certain reflex points or zones, which enables the therapist to focus on and successfully treat the areas of concern.

On the other hand, a sports massage is a type of Swedish massage that involves pressing the upper muscles unto the inner muscles to encourage or stimulate the circulation of the blood and lymph fluids. This technique includes key strokes such as gliding, kneading, brisk tapping or hacking, and lastly, bending and stretching. These strokes help loosen the muscles, nerves, and joints. This type of massage is commonly performed on athletes to prepare their bodies for the sports event as well as for recovery after an event. However, this type of massage is also used for people who are suffering from chronic pains as well as for those who are recovering from injuries.

Orthopedic massage is pretty much a combination of various massage techniques. It is used on patients who are recovering from injuries to help alleviate the pain as well as to hasten the healing process. This type of massage not only stimulates blood and fluids circulation in the body but also aids in realigning tissues and strengthening lethargic muscles.

The Lomilomi massage hails from the exotic paradise island of Hawaii . This type of massage can be traced back to the ancient Polynesia . And like the place it came from, Lomilomi is an exotic massage technique which involves continuous flowing strokes which works gently, yet deeply into the muscles using loving hands and a loving heart, which amazingly helps the patient to relax and totally loosen up. This method or approach is based on the Hawaiian philosophy called Huna. Basically, Huna is based on the basic belief that everything seeks love and harmony.
