Modern Day Options For Tattoo Removal

Tatoo removal has been around for a long time, just not as sophisticated or easy (relatively speaking) as it is today. In its current form, it has been commonly practiced sine the mid 1980's, and is quite widespread in today's society. The modern method for removing tattoos is, of course, the laser, and it is faster, less painful, and more effective than previous methods used.
Previous methods include such processes as dermabrasion, salabrasion, cryosurgery, and actual excision of the skin itself. Dermabrasion and salabrasion (using salt as the abrasive material) are extremely painful and extremely messy. You can imagine what kind of damage an electric sander would do to your skin, and this isn't that different. The scars that are left over from these methods can range from mild to severe.
Cryosurgery is the same procedure that is used to remove a mole from your foot or hand. The skin is frozen until the top layer dies and falls off. Then the next layer is attacked, and so on. It's a long and painful process, and can leave significant scarring as well.
The good news is that laser tattoo removal is relatively painless and leaves very mild scaring if any at all. It is still a time-consuming process for all but the most basic tattoos, but not nearly so excruciating as its earlier relatives. The treated area is generally no worse off than an average sunburn once the procedure is finished.
Treatments are generally one month apart, some a little more and some a little less. The surgeon must allow time for the body to process the broken down pigment before the next treatment or it won't be nearly as effective. Sessions take anywhere from minutes to hours, depending on the area to be covered and the color of pigment to be removed.
Another option for tatoo removal is not really removal at all, but obscuration. If someone has a tatoo that they wish to conceal, they will sometimes go back to the artist and have another tatoo placed over it so that the original art cannot be seen. This requires darker ink that the original, so design options are generally limited, but it is an easy, relatively cheap solution to a tatoo problem.
Overall, laser removal is the best way to go for near-complete removal. It is costly, and it is time consuming, but it is a total solution that is performed by experts who know what they're doing.
