Dancing And The Music Of Yesteryear

When I was young I wanted to become a dancer. I was put into dance lessons, and I hated it. It was not what I thought it would be like. I wanted to dance to have fun but not to primp around in skimpy outfits. As I was growing up they would have dance parties where the couple's mostly young kids would enter dance contests. These contests would last until the last couple would be left standing.

These dances would really get the kids going and for a while, these kids could really rock. But after a while this dance craze went out like smoke. The only time the kids get together now is at their school dances and then if you went, you would see that most of these young kids wouldn't even get out on the dance floor. Most of these kids don't even know how to dance. They don't even know the first steps or even have a clue that dancing can be fun. They didn't know that if the music is right and so is the mood, you can really start to enjoy yourself and the one you are with.

Do you remember the movie Dirty Dancing? Those dances and the music themselves could get anyone's heart to start to pump a little faster and make the people want to dance. To the joy of feeling like you were young again and the world was at your feet. When we were young and in school they would try to teach us dance steps. Of course it was girls dancing with girls, so it wasn't fun. This teaching in gym class didn't last too long, but some of us did learn some of the steps.

After my children were born and if it was a rainy day where no one could go outside, I would crank up our stereo and play the old songs that I listened to before they were born. I would have them stand on my feet like my dad would do with me, and we would dance around the living room for hours. We would do this at least twice a month and when my nieces came over to stay for a while, I would do this with them.

I tried to make the children really listen to the music and to let their bodies move with the sounds, if not the words. If you would really sit down and listen to the sound of the music and not the sounds or words of the songs, the music can make your soul rejoice. This is why the music of yesterday is so popular today.
