The Family Fun Of Fireflies On Warm Summer Evenings

Have you ever gone outside to watch and try to catch fireflies? It is fun for the kids and the adults to go catch them because it is fun to chase them. You can show your kids that fireflies' butts light up. That is why they glow, and it is how you can see them in the dark. Kids are amazed with fireflies, so they catch them and put them in a jar so they can have them in their room. You have to put holes in the lid so they can breathe and stay alive. Some kids like to catch them and then let them go because they just want to play with them and not keep them.
When you catch them you need to be very careful with them because they are so small, and they are very fragile. They don't have shells on their bodies. It is not very strong, and they can get hurt or killed very easily. There are millions of them out there, and they only come out at night in the summer time. They are beetles and they come from eggs. There is a male and a female, and they don't do the same thing at night. The male are the ones that fly in the air, and the females sit on the plants and the grass. If they want to mate they will flash at one another for a few minutes or for hours.
Did you know what the lights on their butts are called? They are called bioluminescence. Their chemicals have to mix it together to make it light up. They have two sets of wings because one protects the other. Did you also know that they can lay about 40 to 1,000 eggs at a time? Only the females can carry the eggs. They will not hurt you or bite you because they don't have any teeth to bite you with. They are so neat, and they have cool designs in their wings. Some kids are afraid of them because they are bugs, but you need to show them that they are gallant and fun to chase and play with.
They are kind of like butterflies. They will not hurt you at all, and they are very safe to hold in your hand. They light up the night sky for you. If you have plans with your lover it makes it a romantic night to sit outside. So just have some fun with the fireflies. It can give you hours of fun.
