Pool Barrier - Protect Your Children

By Donald Arson

Pool Barrier - Protect Your Children

A simple pool barrier such as a removable fence or a pool net can save many families from the heartbreak of a lost child.

In the U.S. there are about 250 – 300 drowning of children under five each year according to the Neighborhood Safety Network. It can happen quickly, with the child missing less than 5 minutes, and silently, people near pools have said they heard nothing from the child as they went in.

Other safety products like a floating pool alarm or laser alarm can only alert you to a potential crisis after a child is in danger. Even though they are better than alarms, swimming pool covers can still fail to protect your child, making your pool even more dangerous. Anyone with children knows how quickly little ones can get themselves into trouble - obviously an alert after the fact can be to late and is not a real solution to a potentially deadly problem. A safety pool barrier that pool fencing gives you is the safest most secure answer, not a just an electronic, 'after-the-fact', alarm

According to the U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission an effective pool barrier “prevents a child from getting OVER, UNDER or THROUGH and keeps the child from gaining access to the pool”

Following the guidelines established by the CPSC a pool barrier should be at least 48 inches high. To minimize places for children to get their hands and feet in the barrier the spacing between bars should never be more than 4 inches, they determined this spacing based on head and chest size of a young child. The bottom of the fence also follows the four inch rule.

In addition the CPSC offers these tips in their guide:

* Gates should close and latch themselves and be child proof.

* Exterior doors leading to the pool should have an alarm on them.

* If you have a pool, learn CPR. Keep emergency numbers and rescue equipment by the pool

* Don’t leave toys in or near the water.

* If the pool is above ground the steps should be removed or locked when not in use.

* If you’re child go missing look in the pool first

* Use pool alarms, which sound when someone goes in for an extra safety measure.

Young children are easily attracted to water not understanding the danger so adult supervision is required even when the pool is not being used and a pool barrier is in place.
