6 easy ways to make your home more cosy with a real fire. By Spot Biddle
The place where the fire is inside of the fireplace is called a fire pit or firebox and these can be made to measure. Since the fire emits smoke, it is essential to then have a chimney or other type of opening to let toxic gases escape from the building.
Should there not be a fireguard or fire screen that fits your requirements then it is quite possible that you will be order a made to measure fireguard or fire screen that will fit perfectly in your fire with the perfect dimensions. If there are babies or small children you should ideally have a nursery fireguard designed to stop children getting too close to the fireplace. Also a lot of people purchase fireguards or fire screens to stop cats going up the chimney!
Fireplace Fenders are used to add decor to the fireplace and to stop any spillage from the fire falling off the hearth and onto the floor. You can choose from a very extensive range of fire fenders from a basic plain base fender through fancy ornate fenders and even the larger club fenders for the larger fire place.
When your fire is roaring you of course need to keep safe with your chimney. Chimney sweeping is often thought of as a dirty job, Ill give you a bit of history here. When chimneys were first required it was then realised that they were going to need to be cleaned, hence chimney sweeps. In this time chimney sweeps realised small children were better for this and started to employ them for, what is reported, very little money however this was unsafe work. There was public outcry of this and in 1840 a law was passed that made it illegal for anyone under the age of 21 to sweep chimneys, and this law is still in practice now.
Inventions such as the special brush that we see in use today that is telescopic and has a head which is able to sweep the chimney with the added aid of a special vacuum the dust is all contained and doesnt go everywhere.
A coal hod is a container for coal. It is very similarly to a coal bucket but is normally a vertical cylinder with a slanted opening at the top to let you pour the coal onto the fire without the coal spilling onto the carpet or floor. Once youve got your coal in, the coal has to have somewhere to go once it has been burnt so an ash pan is needed. Ash pans are holders that fit beneath a fire grate to collect ashes to make it easier to remove and clean, which makes everyone happy.
