How to Pick the Right Putter for Your Game By Richard Neesal
The first-ever recorded game of Golf was played in Edinburgh, Scotland. The modern game of golf first spread from the land of the bagpipes to England, but now the whole world is hooked onto this wonderful sport.
A golfer is never seen on the greens without a golf set. A bad set of clubs can be a handicap to your performance and game score. In other words, it's crucial to find the right set of clubs.
There are 5 types of clubs that golfers use during a game, they are:
1. Woods 2. Irons 3. Wedges 4. Hybrid woods 5. Putters
In this article, we will discuss the putter and how to pick the right one for your game.
Putters are specialized golf clubs that are designed to nudge the ball gently towards the cup. Golf putters are used for short distances on the green, so they provide with low-speed and high accuracy strokes. These clubs have four to six degree lofts that allow the golfer to lift the ball slightly above the ground, if required.
Putters contain steel shafts and have a tendency to reduce flex and torque which result in more effective shots. Putters are the only clubs that come with shafts that can be bent. The club head of most putters are made of malleable material like steel. The other metals that are also preferred include aluminum, titanium, and even brass.
There are three types of putters:
- Conventional: a standard type of putter, specially preferred by beginners. They have a length ranging between 33 to 35 inches. Research shows that short putters perform better. These putters allow you to make smooth strokes.
- Long putter: as the name suggests, it is the longest putter. Using it will involve a lot of wrist action. Because it has a long length, it reduces your sensitivity and your control on the distance. But with consistent practice, you can build your confidence and increase your control in the game.
- Belly putters: if you want to minimize the amount wrist movement then this is your putter. While using this putter the top will rest on your stomach and will provide with better balance. But it can have a negative impact on your ability to judge the distances.
Tips to find the right putter:
1. Go window-shopping; most retail shops have greens and this will give you the opportunity to test the clubs, especially putters. 2. Look for the perfect feel; the feel factor is very important in the sport of golf 3. For slower greens, opt for heavier weights while on slicker grounds you will derive more effective results with lighter material.
Although, buying a good putter will fetch you better results, you still need to practice. This is to say, whichever putter you choose, remember that no putter can help you win a game if you lack the practice.
