When in doubt, read reviews and find out everything you can about a website before you consider inputting any of your personal information.
Also remember that you are not limited to just one professional networking site. If you find multiple sites that you think will benefit you, by all means, join them all. There might be overlap here and there, but more visibility is hardly a bad thing for business.
