How To Take Care Of Your Veneer Coatings

Many people are scared to get dental veneers as they fear that maintaining them could be a pain. Once you spend on these beauties, the fear is that they may discolor, or chip, or even come off! Fortunately, this is anything but the case. Dental veneers can be maintained with very little work on your part. You will find, however, that they may require a bit of habit adjustment. But, what other investment have you made that requires a few adjustments anyway? Let's take a look at what is involved in the process.

For the most part, dental veneers should be treated as your own teeth. If you can grasp that simple idea, then you are 99% there! That means brushing and flossing them everyday. If brushing and flossing your teeth on a daily basis is uncommon to you, you should reconsider getting dental veneers. Actually, if this is foreign to you, then you probably have poor hygiene, and this may be the reason you are considering veneers in the first place. You will find that your investment will go down the toilet faster than you can say fluoride if you cannot commit to brushing your teeth and flossing daily.

Now comes the part which many will frown upon - habit adjustment. Like it or not, dental veneers will require you to adjust your eating habits. Since they are somewhat delicate, you risk fracturing them in the event that you consume hard foods. It is best to talk to your cosmetic dentist about the foods which are allowed and not allowed to consume. A little spoiler - among the hard foods include apples and hard candy. Basically, you will have to give up or figure out how to eat these foods in a way that does not require you to bite directly into the product. You can chew it, but you cannot bite it. So, one thing that many people do is cut the product into little pieces and eat them that way. If you have had braces before, some of the same principles will apply.

If any of the above sounds a bit scary to you, you should seriously reconsider getting dental veneers. At nearly $1,000 a tooth, veneers deserve to be treated with utmost caution and care. Asking you to brush your teeth daily is not asking much, but changing your eating habits can be a problem for many. Before making any final determination, it is advisable that you consult with your cosmetic dentist. He or she will be able to further elaborate on everything which goes into maintaining your dental veneers. Veneers can be a wonderful and exciting investment, giving you an amazing smile, but you need to take care of them!
