Tarot Card Definitions For Major Arcana

The Major Arcana is the part of the tarot cards combining the most divine beauty and highest symbolism.

Judgment

This card stands for qualities like stagnation, fear of death and change, delay in completion, guilt, separation and loss, rebirth, awakening, accomplishments, vitality, health, turning points.

The World

Qualities like repletion, culmination, completion, fulfillment, delay, distrust, hesitation, frustration, inability to finish are signified by this card.

The Hermit

Positively, it represents introspection, Reflection, Plan, Calmness, Discretion, Caution and Assimilation.

The Lovers

It represents THE ORACLE OF THE MIGHTY GODS OR THE CHILDREN OF THE VOICE. When upright it signifies dilemma, foresight, union, harmony, making choices through intuition.

When reversed, it means indecisiveness, procrastination, infidelity, conflict, duality, disharmony, deception, contradiction.

The Fool

It stands for spontaneity, navet, innocence, unexpected incidents, important decisions, new internal beginnings, optimism, joy, force, and energy when upright.

When reversed, it signifies impulsiveness, wastage of creative energy, instability, gambling, foolishness, rashness, not finishing previous tasks, seekers of constant change.

The Empress

It represents THE DAUGHTER OF THE MIGHTY ONES and its rulership is Venus. When upright, it stands for marriage, pregnancy, fertility, maternal care, love, creativity, domestic stability, security, ambition, growth.

If the card is reversed, it forebodes poverty, unwanted pregnancy, promiscuity, sterility, relationship blues, creative blocks, domestic disturbance, lack of affection, failure to attain success.

The Hanged Man

It represents THE SPIRIT OF THE MIGHTY WATERS. If the card is upright, it stands for transformation, rebirth, revivification, a waiting period, present sacrifices for future benefits, flexibility of mind, adaptability, temporary suspension of advancement, devotion.

When the card is reversed, it signifies apathy, oppression, selfishness, materialism, lack of commitment, loss, status quo.

Justice

This is ruled by Libra and represents THE DAUGHTER OF THE LORDS OF TRUTH. If upright it will stand for justice, fair play, straightforwardness, clarity, marriage, divorce, legal action, resolution of conflicts, lack of prejudice.

If reversed, it will represent bias, inequality, injustice, imbalance, delay, confusion.

The Devil

If the card is upright, it represents materialism, conflict between spiritual/creative fulfillment and security, hoarding money, frustration, lust, oppression, carnal craving, self knowledge.
If reversed it means avarice, overleaping ambition, evil, exclusive focus on material success, abuse of authority.

Temperance

Adaptability, balance, harmony, management, diplomacy, maturity, coordination, placidity, cooperation when the card is upright.

Instability, fickle ways, restlessness, physical stress, conflict, imbalance, volatility if you reverse the card.

The Star

Positive qualities are spiritual love, renewal, fulfillment, confidence, hope, inspiration.
Negative qualities are rigidity, obstinacy, self doubt, unhappiness.

The Emperor

This card stands for qualities like ambition, authority, competitiveness, worldly power, weakness, manipulative ways, indecision, immaturity etc.

The Chariot

This card signifies qualities like worldly success, struggle, overcoming adversity and impediments in the path of fulfillment, ambition, perseverance, avarice, envy, imbalance, dogmas etc.

The Magician

This card stands for qualities such as wit, communication skills, initiative, action, creativity, domination of the material world, and love for risk, confusion, lack of energy and inspiration, failure.

The Pope/Hierophant

The divinatory significance of this card is unconventionality, dubious, slander, distortion of truth, love for misleading, rejection of moral values, routine, authority, ritual, teaching, religious guidance, duplicity.
