Acid Reflux

Acid Reflux

Many people have experienced it at one time or another: that sour tasting liquid that backs up in your throat. The proper term for this is acid reflux regurgitation. It is quite unpleasant tasting and it often causes a burning sensation in your throat. This is because the liquid that backs up in your throat actually consists of stomach acid.
You may be wondering how acid that is supposed to be in your stomach makes it way back up to your throat. Well, the mechanics are fairly simple and easily explained. Acid reflux regurgitation occurs when the valve at the lower end of the esophagus fails to close properly at the right time, and allows stomach acid to come up into the esophagus.
If you only experience acid reflux regurgitation once in a great while, then there is nothing to worry about, because that is pretty common, especially when a person eats certain foods or drinks certain beverages such as spaghetti, chili, fatty foods, greasy foods, citrus juices, chocolate or caffeine. However, if you experience acid reflux regurgitation on a frequent basis, such a twice per week, then you need to start seriously considering some die

t and/or lifestyle changes. Anything that causes you considerable discomfort warrants a visit to the doctor. If you ignore the symptoms of acid reflux regurgitation, then you may be setting yourself up for further and more complex medical problems.
If the acid reflux regurgitation is interfering with your life, then you are most likely suffering from what is known as GERD or gastroesophageal reflux disease. GERD can be treated. The extent to which it will need to be treated can be determined by a doctor. You will need to be ready to tell the doctor about of the symptoms, including acid reflux regurgitation, that you are experiencing and what you think may be triggering your symptoms.
Sometimes, acid reflux regurgitation and the symptoms that usually accompany it, can be alleviated with something as simple as an over the counter antacid. You could try this course of action and see what it does for you, if you are hesitant to make an appointment with a doctor. However, if the discomfort is annoying enough, you really should seriously consider going to the doctor to find out what you need to do to get things back on the right track.
Do not compromise your health. Sometimes symptoms such as acid reflux regurgitation can seem like they are caused by one thing, but they actually can be caused by something else that may turn out to be more serious. Don't take chances, see a doctor.
